Although maschine may be cutting edge now, there's a chance that in future versions of your OS that the machine won't be covered...ask anyone who picked up an MPD-16 about that one...
the second thing is that hardware tends to retain its resale value more so than computer based stuff. Don't get me wrong, if you buy new, you're bound to see a huge devaluation the moment your 30 day warranty runs out. However, with software based stuff...man you're going to have a much harder time unloading it and probably won't get nearly as much for it as you would a hardware device of the same ilk. Consider this: a hardware based music system from 1999 that cost $3000 may fetch about $300-$700 or more in some cases. However, a $3000 dollar computer based music system from back then (and cubase vst) would probably pull in at best $100 (if it is still functioning.)
If you arent sure what gear you need, there's a good chance that you're bound to change up eventually. Unless you're the kind who is a hardcore devotee to a particular platform, workflow, etc, it always pays off to think about what you could get in return when you're ready for a transition.
