I understand what he is saying...it's like when you sample you choose the sample b/c you were moved by it...then when you go with a microchopping and mangling approach you wind up with something that is different - getting away from the essence of the sample which is the reason you chose it...I think you need to find a middle ground where you flip the sample into something that is your own yet still retain the vibe/emotion etc whatever it was about the sample that made you pick it...but don't do "remix" joints...looping is lazy...just get into chopping diff parts of songs and layering them..you'll find that you get new loops and arrangements that keep the vibe of the sample alive
yea def depends on taste...if you like the glitchy sound then yea but like gis sweden said in that case you could just use some synths and efx processors to get your sounds and not need to bother with sampling...seriously tho cartesia you need to find some better 70's records!~
As Gis said- He could have made those sounds from any source-and you make dope shit,Gis,don't misunderstand me-but I've said the same thing to myself about some of your battle beats, as well as some other peoples. Sinapse explained it perfect-you choose a sample from a record because of its sound,melody,and emotional feeling. If you're just doing mangled glitchiness that could come from any soundsource, theres really no point to sampling records at all, it pretty much defeats the purpose. 2nd Sinapse's comment on 70's records too. I mean, the late 60's-early to mid 70's is music's best ever era,period....in all genres imo.

1) If you like “mangled glitchiness” maybe some other tool than SP-404 is better and you don’t need to spend time looking fore nice samples. You can use any sample…

So if I don’t want to spend time looking for samples, as I say in the silly song, should I sell my SP-404…? No, not yet… I have a plan… I’m working on a new track.

just do whatever feels right and build on it. there is no right formula or correct way to do this stuff. there will always be fans and always be haters (as well as indifferent people) of anything you make . the few things i have shared on here have gotten mixed reviews. one person said it reminded them of old dj shadow (which had me stoked) and the other person said that he wished i would have chopped and pushed the samples further. i have the mentality of your original post about preserving the original feeling of the sample. i should probably push further but when i hear a slice in a song i am already putting drums to it in my head. already hearing the loop points. i dont use found drum loops i usually make my own so its not like you have to find 3 loops and paste them together and be done with it. remixing isnt necessarily the path for me but using samples a fraction of a second long isnt my flavor either.

And yes you have to do what you feel is right. At least the out put of a SP-machine cant hurt anybody.
I've been lurking on this thread since you started it Gis, interesting track you've posted in response. Were you being honest to your interests or working towards the tastes of other forum members?
Either way there's no right or wrong answer or hidden meanings to that question.
Apologies, but away from the battles (when you've posted really experimental stuff) I haven't heard any of your tracks. So this one sounds like a big step for you.
Don't sell off your SP! Coupled with other gear its a great way of making old sounds new. Besides, sampling your own recordings is a great way to build songs. As you said- never stop playing!
