It has nothing to do with anyones race...at the same time I can guarantee you madlib isn't gonna get amped up performing for a bunch of kids going through a hip hop phase...and people that jumped on his ship after one of his good friends died. Why do so many people on here refuse to listen to rational justification for an artists actions? Once again, this type of shit goes way deeper than just music.Youre right though- he clearly didn't give a fuck what anybody thought. And i think that's exactly the point he was trying to make. And like I said-just beacuse someone supports you as an artist-you also have to ask yourself if they'd give the slightest shit about you as a person if you weren't an artist. And just because certain people buy your shit-it doesn't mean you owe them anything. If I woulda been at this show, and paid...I'd still feel the same-I'd still laugh about it, sit back and soak it all in....and I'd probably have even more respect for Madlib after.Definitely would be something I'd never forget.

it just boils down to morals as an artist no matter how famous u are

Who are you to say that all the fans are "going thru a phase" or only are there because J Dilla died. Weren't you a kid that started off going thru a Hip Hop/music phase that turned into passion over the years??

The whole argument about not knowing you as a person is complete pompous bullshit - NO ONE GIVES A FUCK ABOUT THE PERSON. People don't sell records, artists/personas sell records. If he wants empathy about his pain and his real life problems that is what friends and family are for - he is there to do his fucking job and put on a music show...with all due respect to Madlib the great of course

word to that man but if you don't have a big name you won't get another opportunity pulling some shit like that...so it's the fame and success that allows one to start to bend the morals a lil

ayo a.D. I'm def not trying to come at you and start an argument or something...it's just as an independent artist that performs a lot I have seen so much of this bullshit and the attitude of entitlement that I see in vets bothers me

It's all cool Sinapse-I used to perform a lot too- but honestly I lost passion for it because I knew that a lot of the people watching me didn't really have a true passion for hip hop,or give a fuck about me.I think you hit the nail right on the head of the mindstate of a lot of musicians once they hit a certain level of fame. "NO ONE GIVES A FUCK ABOUT THE PERSON"--that one sentence says a whole lot. And d don't be mad he got a lot of dough for the show...I'm sure he wasn't going around propositioning promoters-they must've come to him-since he's been more than clear that he doesn't really enjoy performing live.. For all we know the promoter himself was someone that's been shifty with people madlib is cool with..we don't know-there's all kinds of factors that could be involved. but people are making this way more serious than it is- Now all of a sudden we got dollar d questioning madlibs morals & integrity. Crazy.

u know the struggle exactly. since u perform u have in mind to bring ur A everytime regardless of who playin .u dont want to look bad any night. but if u rockin a show with one of ur favs u definitely gonna make sure to be on top of ur game. i was ventin a lil cause i feel some ppl take there status for granted. and the hungry cats gotta go through hoops. and b4 the show most the comments is like all madlib and robot koch. then after the show everyone is knockin who they was boastin about to begin with . like they the only 2 on bill. there was alot of performers. cats put there eggs all in one basket.

nah it's not really that deep but how you respect your job does have to do with character but I'd say there are other things in life Madlib would be judged on besides how he handles his shows --

yes the statement bout not giving a fuck is harsh - but it's true, has always been true and will always be true. If you are getting into the arts b/c you want people to care about you as a person you are missing the point. To me it's pretty logical they shouldn't care bout you when if you didn't make music they wouldn't anyway -

It's the same for everyone in every walk of life dude...no one gives a shit except for your family at home and a few true friends if you are a lucky person.

Edgy discussion here but it's def good food for thought if you spend a lot of time doing shows - Peace to all.

reason why I joined in the convo was b/c I felt like I knew exactly how you felt...you put so much into this shit and each show takes mad energy b/c you are trying so hard to build a name and gain some new fans that night - then some artist they are there to see comes on and loafs it fucks with your head. I been there.

PEACE

It's not logical AT ALL for people not to give a fuck about somebody until they start making music.Or not give a shit about the PERSON that is making the music that helps them survive the day to day. 8 years ago I was panhandeling for change, homeless at times-you think if someone that told me fuck off and get a job on the street showed up at my show 4 years later, tried to congratulate me and shake my hand I'd smile and say "thanks for the support"? Naw, I'd tell them to fuck off and go to hell where they belong, lol.

@ A.d. Yah. Been readin posts for years and never posted, but I'm gettin tired of seeing you thread jackin shit and puttin people down. Then you gotta write a books worth of excuses about "what makes your point valid". It really isn't my place to step in and say anything, but I come here to read about music making, our culture and any other current event going on. I've heard the A.d life story on way too many threads. Suck it up mang and move on. When/If you get the chance to ever play with Madlib maybe you'll know what dibiase is tryin to say.

We all look up to Madlib in some way or another, even as a fellow beat maker, when he basically disrespects his audience, the same people that put food on his table, somethin ain't right. I give props for Dibiase speakin up about it. Not everybody will get that experience that D's had, so it's nice to hear his perspective. It just goes to show we are human, we make mistakes and hopefully we can learn from what others do/don't do.

man do u go ur job wasted???or swig a bottle as ur at the time clock and perform ur task to its maximum unless ur a bartender i dont see it happening lol. im just talkin about that situation cause im sure every show he does is not like that. and also cats who lipsync at shows is another issue . i know for a fact jaydee , preemo, kev brown wouldnt do none of that they gave a fuck. shit dilla rocked a show b4 overseas in a wheelchair explain that .why ppl who are affilated w/ otis hiself and o.g.'s callin me about details of the show, and was not offended let me tell u why cause im a legit source you have no connection at all to either party which gets me and got in the mix. u shouldnt do shows if u dont wanna perform. and im the promoter was not shifty. ur going off speculations im go off facts.
shit the art needs cats who give fuck. thats why u called it quits because u stopped giving a fuck. how is a complete stranger in the crowd suspose to give a fuck about u from the gate. are u approachable ??? that plays a factor did u speak to some ppl at ur shows made some kind of connection? ur askin do i say thank u on few threads. maybe not every single one but i get back to ppl often , but ppl on this forum also reach out to me on twitter or soundcloud, and we speak often . i answer hella questions and give input if i know it. when was the last time u actually helped someone on this forum???

was givin heads in here somewhat of a perspective. u said the exact words
"It just goes to show we are human, we make mistakes and hopefully we can learn from what others do/don't do" i look up to madlib and reconize his talents definitely not tryin to come off like im better than so and so .i just make music and grind if ppl happen to understand then i feel like its bonus. its crazy how it got heated in here for sec. but its a forum where heads can express openly and move on with better knowledge plus music and tips. thats why i came to forum to begin with. definitely dont be a lurker around here man. haha
