try holding tapes near a magnet - like the one in old speakers. you can do bulk erasing that way.

Play the whole cassette with RECORD button down, without recording anything.
I don't know what chrome cassettes are :/

normally, when you use a 4 track cassettes recorder it is adviced to use chrome cassettes, cassettes wit "position chrome" to have abetter and during quality...
