I read this article awhile ago and decided to read up on the monome. So I found the company's blog and...WTF?! there's a pic of my ex girlfriend assembling one of these damn things! no thanks.

True. They're also way too hip looking for me. It looks like something you'd buy in a Design Within Reach catalog. Fuckin' yuppie gear. :D

monome is representative of one of those terrible things that I hate about humanity.

the deliberately limiting of production to make sure you remain part of an 'elite' circle that has access to something..

Buy a doepfer DIY usb midi kit and solder 64 illuminated buttons to it.. build your case.. Hurray you have something just as good as a monome, only 1/10th as expensive.

i wrote them to know if it was possible to play monome's programs also with other gear. i saw people play them also , for ex.,with pad kontrol etc. but their answering were a little elusive and too technical for me. basically you have to write things with max/msp. not easy for a dinosaur like me.

I kinda disagree with the idea that the monome is elitist. First, It's a very small group of people who assemble them all by hand.. second, they had the decency to make available the source (in max/msp) to all of their tools, encouraging the community to extend and build all new patches.. third, they even supported and allowed the hardcore Adruino people to make a DIY clone of the monome. So if you don't want to be wait listed nor pay that kinda price, you can literally get the schematics and build your own Monome using the Arduino and some soldiering skills. I think the folks at Monome have encouraged creativity in a different kinda way. They don't fuck you over like Akai, who's OS on the current batch of MPCs is so horrific you have little choice other than to buy JJ. Granted, the limited releases give it this "on the few" can have it... but in reality, they don't have the staff nor the ability to mass produce and make it cheap. Beyond that, it's a totally different way of performing... it's just another tool like everything else. :)

@ellaguru

if you just want a monome type controller that you can use with hardware without having to run it through a computer you can check out one of these.

http://createdigitalmusic.com/2009/06/03/livids-ohm64-controller-full-of-buttons-and-knobs-as-open-as-you-like/#more-6069

it would work as a midi controller, however, if you want it to do more complicated things that people do with the monome like step sequencing etc you *do* need something like max/msp to tell it what to do...

the problem with me is that i don't know any computer language. it could have be cool to use the sp (or other gear) machines to drive, for example, Molar vsti.
anyway thanx for sharing this reignbear!
it looks like the more complete computer toy i saw. is it valuable only for mac? if it got also mic connection, is The Toy itself!
...what about the price?
