Re: sidechain
notch filters can work wonders too
Re: sidechain
Thanks HD for setting up this thread. i really dig the sound and it's really easy to do in protools. this video is pretty good.

i've always wanted to understand compression better, it's one of those things i keep re-learning over and over.

Re: sidechain
i think it sounds more realistic sometimes, because when you hear a band live the kick drum doesnt really mix with the guitars it pumps out. then othertimes it sounds like crap lol. if you want a subtler effect put it on the return tracks and set it to 50 percent wet. you can get decent sounds out of stereo tracks but splitting the eq bands and experimented with stuff like this. no need to ditch that sp!
Re: sidechain
check out this guy and how hes doing sidechaining for computerdeejaying
the part is at 3min 40s.
youtubelink
he dont use the word sidechain though...
he got his own term the smartmixer.
think he programmed it with some presets in ableton.

hurlingdervish,
is there a way in your opinion to obtain sidechain with hardware? i mean it exists a way to doing it with multitrack recorders accepting external fx?

i think if you did it manually with a volume fader while its bouncing, you would get better results because it would only dip when you dip
but there are hardware compressors with a sidechain input

He's using a VST of some kind for doing this. It is different from normal compression in the way that is able to compress only the lows, mids or highs. With the ableton compressor you can filter the compression input, but the compressor output works on the entire frequency range.
You could set this up in ableton by splitting the compressed track into two (hi/lo with EQ3) to send/returns and then apply the compression the the prefered send/return.

its no vst its ableton live native plugins. i know, i have it
audio effect rack, smart mixer or whatever its called
its up for free on his site and buried in the ableton forums

Please provide a link or up it. I would like to see the details of how it was setup.

here is a video that i posted a link to a few pages back talking about hardware sidechaining using a machinedrum, monomachine and a FMR RNC compressor.

thanks, tha's interesting, but it don't shows pratically how to do it...maybe he uses hardware compressor that have sidechain in incorporatd as hurlingdervish said?

yeah, he has a hardware compressor that has a sidechain input. he is sending one channel of the machine drum with a kick drum on it to the compressor. so wherever he programs the kick drum to trigger it triggers the compressor. the monomachine is being fed through the input of the compressor. so wherever he programs his kick drums from one specific channel of the machine drum it triggers the compressors sidechain and compresses the monomachine.

thanx, it's clear!
Re: sidechain
okay im gonna ressurrect this old ass thread to ask a question thats highly n00bish but i just wanna know.
can i use side chain compression on my tracks to better distinguish my kick drum and bassline without having the "ducking" effect? or at least a lot of pumping.
its something im gonna learn and definitely gonna work on getting to know it MYSELF tonight after i get out of work but a quick yes or no seems like it could be applied here.
ty.
