so I use the 303, so all my beats are recorded one track, is there anyway to apply sidechain? because from what I can gather you need two tracks...

Man this stuff confuses me....Compression and all that....need to work on that part of my beats, thinking about putting an ep together so need things tidying up

i have an sp-303/404/505. what i do when i use the great 303 is to record drum parts in different tracks. i use to record in midi sync, so no problems of synching (my english...). so i can separete drums from bass or whatever.
having separete trax let you apply sidechain.
if you look at the videos this is explain in a very easy way, trust me.

example (ableton live) with sidechcomp vst, not the one present in ableton live 7, 'cos i've got ableton live 6 and the ableton sidechain is preasent in a not complete form.
you have: track1-sidechain track2-drums track3-keyboard.
set track2>audio to>track1(sidechain)>track in (down "audio to")>3/4 sidech.
track3>audio to>track1.
track1>monitor>in
to hear the drums just tweak the keyvolume parameter in the vst.
after you have to tweak other parameters of the vst (the threshold and the ratio are the most important parameters) to make keyboard sound "follows" the drums rythm and that's all.
experiment and enjoy yourself!

where do you record your things?

ps

what about the "collabo" thing anyway?

nice post again! (except justice, i don't dig them, but it's me).
i experimented a little with sidechain as you know and i noticed that interesting fx can be done if at the place of sidechaine we put, for ex, delay or distortion.
try this hurling, and tell me.
peace

madlib doesn't himself but when he sends it to his engineer he does although it isnt on every song. j-dee did too.

if you want to talk like that though i will too. ive been making music for 11 years and beats for 6 and ive been pissed off trying to figure out why my drums get drowned out even with eqing.
you can make your whole track on an sp and master it on a computer. that doesnt mean you made your beat on the computer. im frankly quite sick of that philosophy....you have to be comfortable when working on beats and some people are more comfortable with just midi and programs, others with hardware. but guess what, your sp is still a digital circuit, and not analog, and is still technically a computer.

so if you want to not use a computer to make music then go pick up a guitar
