How does the Vinyl Sim compare between the 303 and the 404SX?

it's a completely different effect my friend. vinyl sim on 404sx is simply a wow/flutter simulator with a crackle noise simulator added for shits n giggles.

vinyl sim COMP on 303 and 404 is a very intricate compression algorithm that has never been reproduced by any other compressor ever created.

I see. when I used it i didn't notice it compressing anything. Was just this low resolution filter with the aforementioned noise simulation.

i'm actually glad it doesn't actually compress audio. I can use my fairchild 670 emulation plugin for compression

make sure the volume on your "chain" is not too high. All i know is you have the 303 and i'm assuming a turntable. If your using a turntable like mine then you have a mixer. if you have a numark pt 101 then just worry about the volume on there and your 303.

if you have a mixer like me then worry about the mixer volume and the 303.. try not to make your overall level go past -6dB

level refers to how loud an audio signal is. in a song, you have multiple audio signals, no? from each different sound going into the mix. the kick drum, the snare drum, a piano being played, every thing has it's own level of sound, loudness, you know?!?! and these levels must be fine tuned in coordination with each other to make a good sounding end product.

Also, they say that you should be mixing with your mastering level emitting 75dB of juice. I use SPL meter apps to detect this.

Zendan, the 505 is cheaper & is supposed to be similiar to the 303......i've heard it has the same vinyl sim as the 303, it can sound nice & grimey.....I hear good things.......someone that has owned it could probably shed more light...

why wouldn't you just record them at the volume you want them to be at in the finished product???

nah, clipping is good on tape if you know what you're doing

tape compression when you don't know what gain setting even is sums up all lofi dudes. There's probably a vst or 10 for that

First off, you can NEVER know at what level your instrument is going to 'sit' in the final mix, too many variables, and it's a general rule of thumb to record as loud as possible (to get the best signal to noise ratio) with all the frequency recorded, because it's better to take down those you don't need, then to boost something that wasn't even recorded in the first place.
Also by boosting frequency, you add hiss and possibly phase shift (if you're using mics without managing the distance between them and the sound source


Compression IS NOT about dynamics, compression is KILLING dynamics (that is, if you're not using it properly, have a poor compressor, or don't have a clue about what it does, and you just crank the knobs hoping miracle will happen) because it evens out the signals.
