Re: learning about compressors
I'm gonna check out the above vids tonight. Compression has been hard for me.....I understand it for the most part, but I need more experience with it. I like the compressor in the MPC 2500/1000, but it seems to be a little different (or I just don't know how to use it). I just adjust the parameters until it sounds good & it's easy to get sounding good.
I bought an Alesis 3630 Compressor, mint for $30.00. It has stereo in/out or dual mono in/out as well as 2 side chain inputs. I've heard mixed reviews, but I got it cheap, so I'm going to use it to learn more about compression & will hopefully start using it on my beats. I heard some demos of it, Chameleon Sessions (youtube vids) uses it & makes hip hop, he can get it sounding really good in my opinion.

here's my signature "2ND H4ND COMPRESSION" for u;
>>1.5:1
>>slam the threshold to whatever negative limit you have
>>bring up make up gain to your preference
>>patch in an addition limiting compressor to compress your compression
all on the master channel
that's how i got this sound;

"wrong" and "right" are but mere opinions
i've been at this for some time dude, and i'm not saying that this THE WAY to do it... I'm simply sharing insight to what my years of experience and experimentation have led me to.
This is the secret behind MY OWN PARTICULAR SOUND.
So take that into consideration when re-reading my post (and maybe even trying it out before you knock it).

that's why r4ph said "and i'm not saying that this THE WAY to do it"
for me it's MFX12 (with different settings depending of what i want / release-attack) then resample on tape (wich bring tape compression)
sometimes i use vinyl sim instead and it kills dynamics like you said: sometimes it's good, sometimes bad
i'd like to try an external comp, just to hear how really it does affect the sound
i have for reference the way how the kicks/comp sounds good in house music like
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0JLQA0C ... BB47119C44
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lyAiOBXSfoI
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grauSRYjJQE (i strongly recomand this youtube channel for those who like house)
this is because of external comp i think
