It was just lost in translation, the 808 drives will be out at the end of the year, Akai and Emu drives in the next few months

Re: Hope for a zip -replacement in the next year !!!
Well they originally replied
"Sorry release for SP808"
With the "Sorry" i assumed that it meant it was a no go, but when i spoke to a Asian Friend, he said that sometimes they use the word sorry to take the place of a sentence if they are not great at English, hahahaha
When i emailed again, the reply was
"Sorry, next couple of months is the EMU/Yamaha replacement, then converted to SP808 for end of year"
Hahaha

Re: Hope for a zip -replacement in the next year !!!
the 808 is the only SP missing in my collection... but since i've read a ton of bad Reviews regarding the zip drive i don't know what to do...
i would love to own a 808 but when i already know about the hassle with the zip drives... can't decide if it's better to get one now and hope there'll be a replacement CF-Reader or just wait until a working Reader is out and buy a 808 after...
hope they can deliver a working CF-Reader for all you 808 owners.
or is there a SP-808 user which would tell me "get it!" even with the zip drive?

Dude, I have owned an 808 since the middle of 1999. With constant use forward to 2014 the original drive was more or less fine.. it was only then that my zip drive started flaking out, which I attribute most to using worn-out discs. It didn't take me too much time to source a fairly okay 2nd hand drive an a bunch of new, unused discs and since then I've been using it in combo with the 404sx, and now two days ago I scored a 303.
The 808 does so much... in combo with one or more other samplers it's just exponential. For me it's there as the start and end of my chain; I'll give an example... one of my favourite techniques is pad-resampling a phrase on the 808 while listening to something I want to overdub on the 404 (getting over the limitation of no EXT-SOURCE resample on the 404sx, btw the 808 can). The 808 allows you to pre-listen to the result (save sample yes/no). When happy, sample that to a free pad in the 404 and you've used no memory on the 808 and have an in-time overdub you can bounce together on the 404.
Dual ins and dual outs, the effects-processing and the ability to fine-trim samples and perfect-match bpms make it my conerstone piece of gear.. as I said, I have it at the tail of my chain also - means I can take a sample from either of the other two samples which at best will give me a nearest-to bpm-reading, then fine-trim it and tweak it to a whole-number bpm for syncing to acapellas for example. Tho I'll admit I'm biased, after 17 years with the machine it's like my lungs or sumphit; and so I have never used any other brand of sampler than Roland - on the other hand, I've never felt a need to.

Besides, you have enough samplers in your collection to open a small museum... but you're missing the No.1, the well-spring, the source of it all.. the "groovesampler" hahaha!

Wow thanks lif! I could get one for 180 shipping incl. And your post lets me start to think this over again
Sounds like there are some nice features too which arent available on the other SPs (probably roland/boss had the collector in mind?
