You can check the engines on the akai website. The 1k , 2500 and the 500 all use the same a/d systems , the 2k and 2kxl use the same and the 3k has its own opposed to the 60 and so on. I think after the 3000 they all sound pretty crappy ( the 24bit on the 4k is nice but still not great for adding much "tone" to a sound ) the mv is by far my most used tool. I am not sure about the statement of "lack that 'signature MPC' sound" as i dont think the mpc has a signature sound its a sampler you get whatever sound out that you put into them?

I think that if you can make beats, you can make beats...... no matter what the hardware. I use a mpc1000 with all the bells, and I'm getting a 404 next week.

The Mpc does have some flaws(loading time is my biggest gripe) , but you just have to learn your way around the limitations of different machines.

I'm sure the sp404 has flaws too.... I'm buying a trigger finger/mpd24/padkontrol to get around the lack of velocity sensitivity on the 404.

As for the "mpc sound" I don't think there is such a thing. If you learn how to treat/effect your sounds/samples properly, you can get a good sound out of pretty much anything.

I know this debate will never be resolved, but thats just my 2 cents....

Ps. This forum is wayyyyy better than any of the mpc forums.

Why do you recommend the padkontrol? Just asking.... I'm not decided on any of those three yet, just wanna know what make the padkontrol stand out for you.

it's got the best pads i've ever used
really lovely to play on
plus the drum roll/flam using the X/Y pad can achieve some really expressive performances

i've been using the padKontrol to 'play drums' live with my dad's jazz band
it's a really dynamic performance tool

I can't speak for the mpd24, or the padkontrol, but I would recommend against the trigger finger on grounds of lack of sensitivity. As a USB pad controller for a computer, it is ok... and helps add a lot of expression to a computer-based setup... but the feel of the pads is pretty week if you have used other surfaces, and their response is limited to a tiny little sensor below the very middle of the pad which makes it hard to achieve consistent results.

I'd definitely not recommend the MPD24, i had it about 2 weeks before I sold it again and the pads really are terrible on that thing... I've got no regret whatsoever that I got rid of that thing.

Can't speak for the Padkontrol or Trigger Finger, but I've heard the Trigger Finger is even worse than the MPD24... so... I'd try them out in a store before buying them if possible.
