I suggest the 2kxl. I think the classic 2k need a start up disk each time its turned on and takes about 30seconds to load. On the classic you cant resample at different bits. It also has only 1 pad bank, the xl has 4. But if the classic is a good deal I would suggest grabbing it. Check Damu the fudgemunk rockin the classic on youtube.

correct the classic has a boot disc for the os it takes about 10-15 seconds to load not a big deal. The xl is a better machine but i think it would go great with a sp as well. They are starting to really fall in price on ebay and even www.guitarcenter.com used gear areas as well. Just make sure you check the screen or ask the buyer how the screen is i have had 2 of them go out on me with bad pixles over time so you dont want to get one with a messed up screen then pay another 150 to fix it.

I personally like the 2k classic best. Just because its got really beef pads :) It actually has 4 banks also btw. I used to use one and I think they sound terrible but u got an SP so no worries there. And since u have an SP im assuming u just want it for the pads/sequencer...and maybe to do some pitching. The 2kxl will probably have more than what u need since u already got the SP.

i really recomend you never buy a mpc 1000

i would honestly say go with the MPC 1000. get it new so you'll have the new pads, drop the HD and ram expansion in and you're good to go.

Im inclined to agree with Hot Sauce, as long as you get one with the working pads, you're going to save yourself a ton of money compared to getting a 2500, I mean, if you download that JJOS for £15 or whatever, it gives you a ton more features as well as more intuitive operating and stuff like that. The 1000 will be able to do everything the 2000xl can do and more, the only difference is if you're really into that mpc mythology, u know, and you want the "classic feel" or whatever (I've never delt with any mpc other than a 1000 so i really cant give an opinion on that). But TECHNICALLY at least, its a better machine. The 2500 is nearly 50% more expensive, and I say the less money you give to Akai the better lol

But don't take my word for it, i mean if I cud turn back the clock I'd just have bought two 404's!

I have noticed the 2kxl has a ill signiture sound compared to my other 2 samplers, the mpc 1k and sp404 -I love the timestretch, it can do amazing things with bass/subbass. the filter is sick too, and messing with the bits is sick on drums. Even if you dont get the fx card with the 2kxl you can still alter a sound pretty good.

... I went from 404 to MPC1000 back to the 404 ... Now, I have them both but I'm mostly (nearly always) using the roland. I think the workflow is better and the FX are super-dope!!! I think I'm gonna sell that 1k although it's good for creating "big" drum-patterns...
Sequencing is way easier with that akai (step edit is lovely) and the mute-group-feature is really useful but the FX ...

If you're going to spend some big bucks, I'd really recommend going for the MV-8800... it may not be an MPC and lack that 'signature MPC' sound, but it's a true beast! I've messed around with it about a month ago and if it weren't for a shitty fraud when trying to buy one cheap(er) from eBay I would already have one. It's probably the best money can buy at the moment, although I have no experience with the older MPCs (2000, 2000xl, 4000) nor the MPC5000.

I think the 2500 has different converters or something. It definately sounds more full. But all 1-2ks sound the same. and the 500 could possibly be the worst sounding sampler ive ever heard :)
