the SP style of chopping is different to the MPC style

let's say you have your 30 second sample on Pad C1
use the Mark button to 'grab' a section that you want (a single note, drum hit, etc)
once you have used Mark to grab the desired section, use the Resample function to copy that chop to another pad, say C2
now, go back to C1 and press Mark to revert it back to the 30 second sample

now you repeat the Mark action again, to grab the next chop that you want
once again, Resample it to C3

keep doing this until you have all the slices you want layed out across the bank of pads

hope that helps. if you're still confused, let me know

it does take some practice to get your chopping nice and neat, keep at it and don't get discouraged
you can still chop on your PC and drop the files onto your CF, but using the Mark button can be quicker and you can do it when you're away from the PC
also i reckon you achieve more unique chops when using the Mark

remember that you can adjust the Start/End time with the knobs, this will help trim your sample to how you want it

good luck man, have fun

definitely man, his style is so original...spacey yet funky, futuristic yet traditional

was discussing that quote with Aelkminsur the other day...gotta love the blunt truth to the statement : )

once you have Marked a sample (the Mark button is lit up red)
then hit the Start/End/Level button
once the Start/End/Level button is also lit up, you can use knob 1 to adjus the Start time of your sample
and knob 2 to adjust the end point of your sample

so if you have a tiny bit of another note coming in at the end of a chop, you can use knob 2 to trim it out in small increments

this should get you started:

when you are recording a pattern in Pattern Mode
set quantize to 8, now tap your hi hats out (these keep rhythm)
then set quantize to 4, put your snares on the off-beats
then set quantize to 16 and tap out your kicks

as you get more comfortable you'll find you get better results without quantize, but it's great for learning the machine and how drum patterns work

the method in column 1 on p 33 only works for adjusting the BPM by half or doubling it

the best way to ensure your sample registers at a certain BPM is to follow the method in column 2 on page 25 of the manual
ie set the BPM to your desired tempo before recording the sample in
unfortunately this doesn't work when you're Resampling
