Gimmicks vs. Raw Talent
I remember when labels used to build the artist career up or just school them somewhat , but they had some talent to work with to begin with. Now whatever gimmick and youtube views is all need. Now this is comedy that girl kreayshawn could only sale under 4000 albums with a million dollar advance, and crazy radio plays which label pays for. total machine backing to only do them numbers. smh !!! I wonder if anyone on these forums was one of the few who bought that album. If so I got jokes for you. lmao >>> http://hiphopandpolitics.wordpress.com/ ... low-sales/

maybe not total backing but million dollar budget is alot of backing to flop like that.lol even nas didnt get that kinda bread when he was on columbia .
Re: Gimmicks vs. Raw Talent
Never heard of the song or artist... Great article though, makes me feel a little bit better that not any gimmick can make it.

the majors, at least.
The thing is 95% of the time their gimmicks do pay off, so theyre still financially winning

payoff for label not the artist. because label is pretty much like a bank giving out loan. im sure u know that. pay off for artist is gettin on tours pretty much nowadays.

some good points dollarllama d.
The thing is like you say, the hype is built up over you- tube hits....How many people who watch you-tube videos are actually willing to go out and buy an album when they can listen to it for free online?
The labels are probably happy with the fact that millions of hits generate mega advertising...which keeps the suits happy.
As far as the artist is concerned its all about self promotion which probably explains why so many bands tour like crazy....I know its not hip hop but look at rock bands like Motorhead...All they do is tour and make albums....I wonder which one they make more money off?
Peace!
