Don't give up on ableton yet. Try copying your favorite beats. The main key is the velocity on those hi hats. Don't quantise either and keep things simple! You'll get better with practise. Drum machines are cool, but you'll soon find the sound palette limited and out dated. I've gone through half a dozen of these thongs

I've fucked around with a drum machine before. I liked some of the sounds I got, especially after fucking with the effects on my 303
But like people on here said, you run out of sounds. Also there's a certain sound quality that's hard to remove that gives you that awkward synthetic sound. I say dig dig dig spend years finding records, drum breaks, clean snares, cymbols, kicks. You'll never stop finding new sounds. Its time consuming but so isn't learning how to play an instrument. And when you're doing that, shortcuts don't really get you ahead. Plus other producers will gain respect for you when they hear how you freaked that one drum break in a way nobody has before. Just my opinion!

also, some zip fil with drum break and fuckthem up bigtime in your sampler. that's what I'm doing now a day, I suck a creating drum patterns

Try the Korg ES-1. Load any sound you want. Sequence it in step time. It's great. Sounds grimy. And cheap!
