But, as a thought experiment, if there was 100% certainty that the end was here - I think the planet would fall into pure chaos. Humans would truly become animals, and only those with survival skills, supplies, and weapons would survive.

yo its just when the calender resets, its not really a predicted 'end'. they had a different way of keeping records than the west. its the end of a cycle and the beginning of a new one, and they never predicted an apocalypse. wasn't the world supposed to end a few times last year too? it's all bs. btw the mayans were smart as fuck, engineering and mathematical geniuses

I suppose we can argue about the "relative" intelligence of the Mayans, and it may be true that they were ahead of their time in certain thinking. But we simply can't ignore the fact that they were largely ignorant about the world, and certainly the rest of the universe. Humans are inclined to answer questions, even if the answers turn out to be completely wrong. The earth is flat, Zeus is tossing lightning bolts in anger, etc.

There is almost a guarantee, that one day in the future, some person will be pointing at our society, and our knowledge set - and calling us ignorant! We are currently a part of the most intelligent and knowledgable society of humans the world has ever known. But what are the chances that we are flat wrong about some things? Pretty damn guaranteed, I would say.

The thing is, too many humans are uncomfortable with the phrase "I don't know." So, they choose to put in an answer that makes them feel better, and live out their lives in ignorance. That's not a bad thing necessarily - unless they use that ignorance to try to control others. That's when I go postal....LOL.
