It's not essential if you are using mono long/lofi samples primarily, or if youre using the 303 for one shots/chopped drum sounds only. I never tried this, but if you want to use 303 as live fx box via ext source input, a card is not necessary. If you plan to use 303 for recording, chopping, and/or ...

I have a Scarlett Solo interface and I'm using Audacity (which i suspect might be the problem...)

could be maxed out polyphony i guess, but im more inclined to assume that it could be stereo audio samples to blame. i have a similar problem, my 303 bugs out if im using primarily stereo samples. re-sampling more than 2-3 stereo samples at once has my 303 presenting a lag, maybe half a second ...
