Thanks fam, excellent run down. I think in the end I'm going to end up with one of each and call it a day. I've had a few SP's by now but the og 404 was my fave and the SX sounds like it has enough benefits to justify a duo.

Haven't used the SX but kinda want one. Is there anything in it that makes up for the lack of vinyl comp? Digging the storage capacity of SD cards (dj set in a box). Are there any new effects and are do they have potential?

Disc Union in Shibuya Tokyo was good, 5 floors of records lots of different styles, a basement full of jazz n funk.
Found a place in kawaramachi ,Kyoto called super milk, it had a worryingly big gangster rap section, there was also a place near there that specialised in grindcore/death metal/noise ...

Not tryna threadjack but at the moment it's just an MPC 2500, Korg MS2000R, turntable and a cassette deck. Loved the 404 for its dual role - effects and resample combined with above, or making full beats on it's own + vinyl. Always had an eye on the Kaoss pads ...

So I've been looking for a 404 since I sold mine a couple months back ( ) with little success... Considering that I want it mainly for resampling / fx and the price is about the same, would you grab the Quad or 404 if you were in my position?

Haven't used it much but all my software-oriented friends tell me Battery is like an MPC from the future. Ideally I'd spend a few months learning the shit out of it + an MPD.

And not what you're looking for but Renoise is a tracker that's focused heavily on sampling. It's pretty much my go-to DAW.

Also there's a ton of other devices that do MIDI sequencing for cheap , that's a whole nother can of worms though. The Yamaha QY-70 is one of the first that springs to mind, and don't they make some kind of MIDI sequencer for the Gameboy? Lots of options there.

Speaking from experience with most of the MPC's, the 500 is the lowest of the low. Even if all you want it for is sequencing, I'd stay away. The sequencer sucks compared to the other MPCs. You can get a used 2000 (non XL) for around US$300 and the sequencer is pretty good but the best bang for the ...
