Re: jazz/electronic track

It's a (V.I.) saxophone. I wrote the lead part with MIDI.

Re: jazz/electronic track

I think the "talk-box" you're hearing is just the overall grittiness of the drum track. It had a bass line mixed in with it at first... and I passed it through a bunch of things on the 404 until I got that dirty sound that worked just right... that's why the track "breathes" all of a sudden when the ...

A Clock in the Kingdom "tapster phrase"

Here's a tune I posted to Youtube. I haven't been on the forum in a few years, but I'm still using my 404. This track was built exclusively on it.

SanDisk II

That's my favorite card... I've tried others, but the Ultra II is as smooth as silk. No problems whatsoever. And 12 bucks is a great price for one.

I make my drumkits from found sounds... with the great effects on the 404, you can turn anything into a snare, bass, or hi-hat... Just keep chopping and re-sampling until you're satisfied.

computer questions...

O.K. here goes... any comments would be appreciated.

I've got an ancient (2001 era) HP PC... I bought some cheap multi-track software (Magix 12) with the hope of putting some of my 404 stuff in and mixing/mastering it.

If I plug the 404 into the line in (built-in on the computer), I can hear a ...

after playing around with software (which I'm doing off and on right now...) I like the 404 a lot better. It's more fun. Like some of you said, there's no screen to get bogged down in... it's all in the sound. I'll bounce some stuff out to a 4-track cassette, add some stuff, bounce it back in, re ...

what would you change?

...maybe the balanced ins and outs... but the frustrating limitations are what make the 404 so great. I've come up with my best stuff by thinking of weird ways to make things happen. This is what---in my opinion---makes the 404 more like an "instrument" than just a machine. If you want something ...

A Beat

Liked the drums and bass line in this one... what else do you use besides the 404 (to record out to..)?

serious CF card problem

thanks for the comments. This happened to me once before with a cheap brand of card called "Dane-Electric," so I thought it was just the cards... but now with the Kingstons too... I guess I'll try another SanDisk and pray that it's not the 404.

serious CF card problem

Hey all:

this is the 2nd time I've bought some new cards, and had them fail on me. The first 2 cards I bought (SanDisk Ultra II, 1G) work fine... and still do... sound great.

But I just bought 2 Kingston 1Gs from Amazon, and they mess up---big time. Clicks and pops at first... followed by ...

creating synth sounds

I've been doing a ton of online research to find out what kind of hardware I want to get next. I've hooked up my MIDI controller keyboard to the 404 once or twice in the past, and it seemed like all you could do was play each individual sample across the keys (which is cool, for velocity changes ...

It's the first... I'll try that out, resampling as mono... too many stereo samples overload the machine?

thanks

sometimes if I'm playing a pattern and I trigger a long sample on the same beat as, say, a snare drum hit, the long sample gets cut short so that it stops in time to the beat...

any remedies?
