computer questions...

O.K. here goes... any comments would be appreciated.

I've got an ancient (2001 era) HP PC... I bought some cheap multi-track software (Magix 12) with the hope of putting some of my 404 stuff in and mixing/mastering it.

If I plug the 404 into the line in (built-in on the computer), I can hear a pattern playing through the computer/program, but I can't get it to record! Is this a "full-duplex" card issue? Is the built-in soundcard on a 2001 HP a piece of shit? Will I have to buy a good soundcard in order to add the computer into my set-up?

Also----anyone have any experience with Magix Studio 12 software? I have a MIDI controller but I can't get the soft synths triggered from it... sound card issue again? I think I'm mildly retarded when it comes to the computer side of home recording... and I'd better learn, 'cause it really does seem like the only affordable way to put out a nice, mastered project...

i dunno what the issue is there. if you decide you need a new card guitar center had some external usb audio interfaces starting at 100 bucks that should do the trick. i believe the manufacturer was omega.

I have never used that software app, but I might be able to help you with your sound card problem. The problem is I can't articulate my thoughts and form a cogent sentance to save my life, so please bear with me. I am assumming that you are using some sort of MS-Windows OS when I give these insturctions, so here goes. Depending on what version of the OS you have, the exact way to do this stuff may be different, so I'll speak in general terms. First, open your Control Panel and go into your sound settings by clicking on the speaker icon that's labeld "Sound" or something like that. Select "Line Input" for recording. Then open the mixer and slide the slider for the line input up until you can get a decent volume. Proceed from there and make sure that you close other programs that you don't need.
