Recording patterns

Hi all
I'm new to the world of Roland samplers so pls bear with me
When I go to record a pattern on a empty pattern slot it always says either patter full or memory full but I am using a new 512nb compact flash card that has plenty of sampling time
Can anyone help me pls

it sounds like some "initialize related" problem...
do the machine responds well when playing (patterns, sampling, fx etc)?
