I've got an MC505, midi keyboard, ableton live 6 on my laptop and more recently an SP606. I've been having fun with all of them as standalone units but now would like to put them all together...
I was thinking of using the MC505 and SP606 as separate instruments, the SP606 as the midi interface and then ableton as a sequencer. Is this possible and would this be the best way to combine them all?
My other problems are:
1) what are the settings in ableton that I need to make to be able to use the SP606 and MC505 as 'external instruments'
2) What cables do I need (for the whole setup) and where do I put them?? I have experimented putting standard plugs from the headphone jack in the SP606 to the mic/audio input jack in the laptop but it doesn't seem to work; the mono output jack from the SP606 is no good either. Should be ok through usb?
There are heaps more questions as I'm new to all this but this is probably a good starting point...

20 tracks at once is great when jamming; more than enough to get most ideas hammered out.
To your question; I have never used Abelton Live, so I cannot help you there. I'm afraid.
I can help with connecting the MC to the SP though.
You need 1 x midi cable and 4 x TRS cables.
Hook the midi up like this: SP -> midi out -> MC -> midi in.
Set the MC to midi slave mode. The SP is the master, so you use the transport on there to start/stop. Remember to save your patterns with most tracks muted so that you can select a new pattern without a wall of noise coming in.
That's the midi taken care of. Now, the audio.
Connect the output of the MC to the input of the SP. Use the 'input source' button to hear the MC coming through. Connect the output of the SP to your mixer. Done.
Now you can use both together and use the FX from the SP on both units

After a frustrating hour, I found that connecting the sp606 to ableton was much like connecting to audacity; the trick was to change the USB output src to 'mix'!
Now it seems like the possibilities are endless; but what's the best way to hookup a midi keyboard into the system?

There's your answer right there man! Those presets are lame as, I know - so delete the suckers quick sticks!
Now, when you load a drumkit/multisample, put it on those banks and away you go. Pad bank 1, pad 1 is a 'B' on your keyboard. Each pad in each bank goes up the keyboard chomatically from there, so just load the right notes into the right pads (use the chopper - don't do it one-by-one) and you're away.
