KP3 or the kaosillator

hey fam.
just some questions about the kp3 and the kaosillator

which do you thinks going to go well with the sp 404?

i know that kpc and kaos. has different functions and some similar functions. (correct me if im wrong)

if i get the kp3, i was thinking of putting sample in kp3 first, play with it, and send it to sp 404 for sequencing.
in the case of kaos., i was thinking of doing everything first with the sp and then put in effects? in the sp 404.

if you guys were me, what would you guys do?

The kaosillator is a phrase synth so it has no effects.Are you thinking of the Mini Kp which is the baby bro of the KP3?

I have the mini KP and its cool for the price, but the KP3 brings a whole load of functionality to the table inc samples and midi. If you can afford it I would go for the KP3 - Hurling uses one to great effect, maybe he can fill you in with more details.

personally the kaossilator seems fun but too much like a toy for my tastes

kp3 as a sampler/effects before the sp sampler works AMAZING.

you can pitch your samples by tempo, so you can easily tune them

the sample modes are great too.

also you can control the segments of the sample split into 8 pieces so you can cut out pieces of the sample so instead of playing through
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

you can try

1 3 5 7

for a form of slicing...

very nice for pin pointing loops and samples for your SP.
then once you get use out of those 4 samples, back them up on the sd card or just sample some more.

Personally I think you'd have more fun and be more productive with a mini kp + kaossilator and your sp404. The Kaossilator is no toy when used creatively in the right hands.

the reasons the kaossillator is amazing is the same reason i dont want one :

it makes things too easy, and i like to have full control over a real keyboard.

now if korg got off their butts and made a percussion only kaoss pad/kaossilator...now we are talkin

I agree it does make music easy to create, but good music still takes a lot of work/practice. If you're sampling the kaossilator into the 404 anyways the sound is gonna be changed once you start sequencing and looping so the most important part is having fun and getting ideas out there. The guy in the video is not a noob by any means. He teaches violin at the Royal College of Music in the UK and even he still practices hours to get the track done right in one take. I'm sure whatever route the OP decided to take he's gonna have fun. Either way it's win-win.

I know the kp3 has some basic synth patches, but nothing like that of a kaossilator. I think the mini kp is purely Effects. The KP3 is a very power machine and can be used as a standalone unit. I think the only flaw in the KP3 is the slowness of loading samples from the SD card, in this regard it's not intended for Live performance use. As a live looper/fx unit it's PERFECT!

the loading time doesn't bother me. if you have an sp too you could very much load things live.

as for synths you have something like
square, saw detuned, mixed square/saw, vibrato and white noise ( good for making percussion)
and then you get a couple of automatic drum loops (meh)
and two cool drum modes, one that is a kick on one side a snare on the right side and when you lift your finger a high hat plays. an interesting twist to drums. then just a kick and snare on opposite sides with the y axis controlling the decay amount. in between the kick and snare is sort of a tom tom sound.
but what is more interesting is that there is a bunch of "sample modes" that allow you to control and warp aspects of the sample in the X/Y fashion.

I have both the minikp and the kaossilator. Love them both. You can play the kaossilator like an instrument. Takes lots of practice. I don't need a keyboard to make music. You can make sick loops on it and record them to the SP. I am new to the 404sx but I'm looking forward to hooking up the minikp up to it and making some sick sounds.
