i have both.
the sp-505 is a beast.
the sp-404 is good, but i don't like its pads very much. i prefer the sp-303, wich also i got (i prefer it also for the sound). but with the 404 you can build live songs in time, with the sp-303 is more hard to do. but with the sp-505 you have a real sampler/sequencer thing. and i think for this is better than sp-606 (wich i sold).
i think that we cannot compare the sp-505 and the sp-404, there are too many differences.
anyway good buy!

i mean that with sp-404 you can play (live) the patterns one after the other without interruption, instead with the sp-303 this is not possible 'cos you have to do it manually (and so, forcelly, without the same precision of a machine). the sp-404 and the sp-303 got the potentiality to do songs (live) and not only patterns, but with the sp-404 this is easier.
the whole thing is better done with the sp-505 wich has (like the sp-606) a good sequencer. and, patterns+patterns you can create and build up real songs (live or not)

live loop overdubs? not on the 505.

do you have the 555 how does that loop function work? say you have a footpedal plugged in can you have a sample loop and keep layering overdubs on it and not miss a beat?

well, i don't know much the 555.
what do you mean exactly for "overdubs"?if it's the way to apply live fx, yes. if it's the way to apply and record fx, no.

if you got no problem of space and transport (and price) get the mv, is a real professional beast. depending also about what you want/have to do, sure.
this is my advice.
