Sequencer + 2 samplers... (setup advice plz)

Currently my setup consists of an RM1X and a SP-404. I have an opportunity to obtain an Akai S950 (which I intend to take up, for lo-fi win), but I'm not sure how much flexibility I'll have in terms of controlling both samplers from the sequencer.

Let's say, for example, I run the MIDI OUT from the RM1X to a MIDI splitter, and from there to each sampler. Could I set this up so that the first few tracks on the RM1X control the S950, while the remaining tracks trigger samples on the SP-404? What sorts of things will I need to consider?

Any and all advice appreciated.

might be better getting an MPC (Midi Production Center)

the best sequencers ever are the 60/3000 mpc's without a doubt, though the sp1200 is a perfect match for the s950, but you don't want to hear about that

I don't know about the RMX?

I'm afraid I have no intention to go for an MPC. I'm quite happy to work with what I have what I want, but it'd be good to know whether it's feasible!

What I'm hoping to do is trigger notes on one sampler without inadvertently triggering any on the other - hopefully there's a way to do this without just leaving a bunch of empty spaces on each one, and if such a workaround exists I expect it could be done with sequencers other than the RM1X.

well, you could always make a sequence on the 404, use the other sequencer to sequence the S950 and set the 404 to start when the other sequencer starts...so that way, the 404 is dancing to his own rhythm but still grinding on that S950 (getting it's kevin bacon on), while the RM1x chaperons

So you mean have the RM1X trigger the S950's samples while synching the 404 to it's MIDI clock?

yeah man, you can set the SP to start when another sequencer tells it to, just make a sequence in the 404 and hook it up to the main sequencer and if it's set right it will start when the other one starts..

I used to do this with my SP1200 and my MP, just so you get the diff. swingage from each machine

just set the midi channels for each sampler to something different. Like Ch1 = 404, and Ch2 = S950. Then program the notes on the RM1X accordingly.

on the s950, set it to receive midi on a certain channel

on the SP, set it to receive midi on a different channel.

set both of them to external clock.

on the RM1X set some of the tracks to output midi to the SP's channel.
set some of the tracks to output midi to the s950's channel.

Set the clock on the rm1x to internal (this means it will be the master tempo machine)

as for plugging in, I dont think you'll need a midi splitter.

Plug midi out of the RM1X, into the midi IN of the S950

then plug the midi THRU or midi OUT (either one) plug on the S950 into the midi IN plug on the SP. Make sure in the s950 settings it is not set to filter out the messages for timing/clock or else they wont get passed on to the SP.
