recommend me some dub

hey guys

i'm looking for dub recommendations, can be old or new but i'm specifically after dub. i know there's loads of great reggae around, and that the distinction can be somewhat marginal, but please keep the recommendations here dub-oriented

i'm after huge basslines, huge reverbs and the mixing desk being played like an instrument by a guy smoking a doob :wink:

so please list albums, songs, DJ mixes, youtube vids, etc of some of that wobbly dub

i've been playing Scientist vs Prince Jammy - Big Showdown at King Tubby's alot recently, some really deep grooves on there

I never was such a big fan of that "electronic" dub... but I'm also interested in this thread.

I wonder if anybody actually makes dub or any kinda reggae influenced stuff?!

Too bad that I didn't finished my revolution dub for #24. *lazy mofu*

exactly! that's why i'm trying to listen to more, get a feel for it so i can start laying out some thick dubby goodness

MFX #2 Tape Echo is great for those dub echoes...i add some reverb as an aux send on my mixer to really get it bouncing

Dub is pretty "easy"... :roll:

I'ld say start with the bass / grab a reggea song, filter it (need to be good) and you're halfway done... but I guess you already know. Anyway it's made fun to sth. downtempo

i've been composing the dub basslines in midi so they can change tempo and so i can mess with the synth parameters

it's definitely fun to mess with the downtempo stuff

as your sound example shows, the 404's effects are well suited to dub things up...you got some nice tasty sounds there

augustus pablo is pretty awesome - you can see a line from him thru gorillaz. melodic and heavy.

king tubby is super important for how his production techniques pushed so many boundaries. you can go from him to 'guns of brixton' by the clash in one or two steps. really good fing on tubby in a recent wax poetics. biography is hilariously disturbing.

i also really like the aggrovators...heavy and tight in a loose dubby way. which i know makes no sense. but check it.

lee perry pioneered a buncha production ideas as well. beastie boys kinda brought him some late-life fame, but his older work is worth checking out.

and then there's the stuff that was influenced by dub...especially the clash, asian dub foundation, bad brains (!!!), and newer stuff like burial and kode9.

to me, one of the most important things is how much these guys did with very little quality gear. its not even lo-fi. its no-fi.

Beyond what's been mentioned already, try tapping into a few of the compilation labels like Blood & Fire which covers ground on all the classic dub. Then peep something like the Rhythm & Sound comps for a taste of some really nice newer dub (King In My Empire is the shit!).

Also not mentioned on that list earlier...

Aswad - "A New Chapter Of Dub". Particularly the track Dub Fire. It's a pretty classic 80's dub release.
