Confused with 505s workflow

Post by K.loor »

Hello to the forum.
From the Thursday i am an owner of sp-505 :D.
I face some trouble on how to rec my drums above the loop.
Can anyone explain to me, the workflow (with steps) of making a beat or upload some helpful tutorial?
I have read the manual and i have saw some tutorial, but none of them answered on my queries.
Thanks in advance.

I saw some of the olby' s video. I have two questions.
First, you rec every instrument, in one of the sequencer parts? E.g. drums in 1, bass in 2, leads in 3, something extra, like vocals, in 4?
Second, can you resample the whole beat from the sequencer and add more voices, i mean, if you can expand the polyphony, like you do on a 404.
Thanks in advance.

first question: you can do as you feel, i mean, yes, you can do like that or also record all in one track (part)
second question: unfortunately no, resampling is intended only as sampling a live pad performance, so you cannot sample while sequencer is playing; some sp-dudes like to make beats without using sequencer using just resampling live pads instead of, this is called the resampling methods: they layer drums+samples like that

Thanks for the response. You mean i can resample e.g the sounds of four pads in one pad? Also i notice that the factory sounds can' t be adjusted. I tried to reduce the volume of the drums but nothing.. Is better to use sampled drums?
Which is the rec level that you prefer? I read in the manual, that suggested to adjust the rec volume in the third square from the top, but with this rec level the custom drums sound much louder.

resample: yes and you can add one effect during the procedure also
factory sounds: mmm strange, i remember it was possible
sampled drums:it's all about your taste i think the factory sounds are there in case of
rec level: try to experiment;)

In factory sounds the system says "protected" when i try to adjust them. It' s a shame, because has some good factory sounds. Except if you can exchange or resample them in another bank, and after this maybe is possible to adjust them, i will experiment soon.. : )
It' s a remarkble machine for shure, and has very warm sound.

The 505"s workflow has similarities with 404? I ask this because one of my friends has the 404og and i wonder if can i ask some help. Also the sound of 505 compared to that of 303?

the 505 has a different wrkflow compared to 404(303)
it is more a studio machine oriented while 404/303 are more immediate
the 505 has very similar workflow of the 606.
the 505 sound is near the 303 but the 303 is grittier

This is very important because the 505 is a cool machine but if you were looking for the workflow of a 303/404 type SP it's not going to do it for you.
If you can adjust your expectations the 505 can work for you, if not you will more than likely end up adding something like a 404.
They just seem to get you where you're going easier than the 505/606 workflow.

As for your friend with the 404 he should still be able to help you better understand the 505 if he understands the 404.

the main differences between 505/606 and 404/303 are that the first ones got a real 4 tracks sequencer and a microediting; to apply and choose fx they're less in-your-face than 404/303; to edit samples they're more accurate (you can see the wave and you have chop functions, you can pan samples -only on 606- etc)

Which sadly enough is what causes them feel different.
They kinda get in their own way when you are in that creative zone.
If you are willing to take the time to gel with them they can work but that direct access that makes people seek the SPs.

I think that's why so many people are peeping at the MK2 to see if it actually expands the functions without loosing the easy to grab vibe.

For me the SP's are either EFX units or a sofa tool the added features that the 505 tried to add just were always better handled by a JJ-MPC1000 or even the MPC500.

Now we have so many sofa tools that I can work in the studio or on the sofa and still accomplish pretty much the same stuff unless there's vocal tracking or such.

I hope you understand I am agreeing with your statements that you have made about the units.

As i understand the workflow, i like it. I came from pocket operators workflow, so the realtime recording in comparison with the microscope adjustments is work well for me. I wish i would be resampling from the sequencer. But we can' t have it all.
To be honest i was thinking for the 404 mk2 but i read some good reviews for the sound of 505.. and i choose the 505 (ok, also it was 200€ more expensive).
Any feedback on how the mk2 sounds?
