I have 500€ to spend !

Post by Saladolar »

Hey, sp headz, just a thread for the fun and maybe to get some cool ideas.

A few weeks ago I decided to sell all the gear I don't really use. I can spend 500€, but making a decision is quite hard.

My set-up is pretty minimal now : turntable & records, a small mixer, ableton & soundcard, og404, sampletrak and my beloved zoom multistomp pedal.

A few ideas :
> A synth (maybe a microkorg)
> fx pedal(s) (chase bliss, strymon...)
> an other sp (202, 303, 555)
> the dark side of the Force (MPC)

Any other ideas ?

Oh yeah, and it's not the only appealing pedal by strymon ! Most of their pedals are stereo, nah ? Could be useful compared to mono pedals, what do you think ?

microkorg is good . rich tones . if you dont like doing custom patches then dont bother . with that board its a bit confusing . the MiniNova is a deecent alternate . easier to patch the sounds customery .

buy some drum sounds .. get them stocked in the archive

or get some percussion instruments . do your own samps

Thanks for your answers, guys !
I absolutely LOVE to tweak and create sounds, that's why I'm not convinced by these mini synths. I sold my microsampler because of these menus and sub-menus. A rack ms2000 (coz of the regular ms2000 size) would be great, but it cost twice the price of a MK and I would need an additional keyboard.
Synths are soooo expensive : I think I should just try a microkorg, which seems to be the cheaper poly synth at the moment. I could grab one for about 200€.

By buying drum sounds, you mean drum kits ? I prefer to build my own drum sounds from samples. The only kit I bought is the Plusma kit, but I didn't even listen to it : I bought it cause I cracked his lp and felt guilty ;)

Still 300€ to spend... Shit, I'm rich

not sure how verse you are with using synths, but i like how the Korg Minilogue looks. 4 voice synth like the microkorg and analog, unlike the microkorg

Yeah, I spend more time to watch synths than money to buy one... still in the dilemma of price or one knob / one fonction :?

I would say don't spend money on drums: create them by yourself ! (and i heard ST224 has a pretty ghetto sound for drums)

For synth, a lot of choices (en plus t'es français et les prix sont basés sur les argus d'audiofanzine):

-(mini) Korg microkorg / analog - multi synthesis/ $200) : really good, but you have to spend time to program, you can do it with a special editor on the computer. I find it fragile tho, and these days everyone have it so there's often that microkorg sound everywhere

-(maxi) Korg poly 800 / analog - soustractiv synthesis/ ($150-250) ; never try but big synth with a good sound

-(mini) Casio CZ-101 / digital- phase distortion synthesis / ($200-250) : i always would this one: looks so nice and sounds so 80's

-(maxi) Yamaha DX9 / digital - frequency modulation (FM) synthesis / ($150 - 200) : i had this one and it was my fav: fm sounds is something special , (the synth is so heavy tho)

-(maxi) Korg Ds8 / digital - FM synthesis / ($150-200) : the Korg equivalent of DX9

there are so many good synths under $300 you can grab, the thing is what sound do you want but believe me, minilogue and all those "new analog crap" synth doesn't sound real analog (except for the mini moog maybe)

if you want an other sp go for the 202 : the limitations will open a new sound to you
same range of samplers, you could buy:
-roland ms-1 (never tried)
or
-yamaha SU 10 (bought 1 week ago and i like it)

and (-akai S20 or remix 16 (drums !!))

all the korg volcas are not expensive

tape deck - walkman recorder ?
or
MD player ?
(for resampling or you can get a good mic and records your own drums on them)

otherwise i would keep my 500€ and try a teenage e. op-1

questions ? pm moi

if you can get an OP1 for 500 euros, that is super cheap I would get it. I paid almost double that here in Norway.

I can recommend the POLY800 , JUNO6, anything by novation or Ensoniq. There is loads of rack modules on ebay all the time too. And with second hand, old gear it doesn't really lose value so you can sell or swap it again.

I often buy something and trade it against something slightly more valuable. And just keep trading up and up slowly. That way I get to sample a lot of different gear without spending more money. I got a 202 and a 555 for 100 euros like this.

You might be able to get something by Elektron in the second hand market for that kinda cash too.

is it me or they keep boosting up the price for the OP-1???
..yea tho, listen to kiyani, he knows his shit. elektron/teenage engineering products might be expensive but def worth it :!:

edit: IMO ive owned a poly 800 and its worth coppin if you or someone else can mod it with moog killer.. other than that its kinda bland

Just an fyi, the Microkorg isn't analog, it's digital (analog modeling). Presets aren't that great, but if you like making your own sounds you can make some really good sounds with it. I really like it.
Another suggestion, the ms-20 mini. I got one for $250, mint condition. It's analog, has mini keys, but not as small as the microkorg. No presets, you have to make the sounds yourself. It's mono tho (2 oscillators). It has a dark mean & grimey sound. I love it.
The Minilogue, which was suggested above seems cool too, I don't have it, but was looking at it for awhile. Poly, analog, good price, a lot of good features, worth checking out.
