Effects can help:chorus and reverb
Do you have any examples of these "flare-less" songs?
What gear do you have?
Are you rocking SP's?

Re: mixing and production
I mean mixing will definitely help but its hard to tell what your track needs if we cant hear it. It could just be poor sample selection. A DAW will also give you more "appropriate" and "professional" tools if mixing is what you actually need. You have to consider that the 404sx only has a 3-band eq (Low, mid, and high). But yeah, until we here that track its impossible to tell what you need. Also it could be the cords you are using. You should be using TRS or RCA to 1/4 if you are using stereo samples. I haven't experimented with using a TS cable with mono samples on the 404 but I know if you use a TS cable with a stereo sample then it sounds weird/flat which is to be expected.

Re: mixing and production
basics are: good flat monitors, do a final mix and then EQing, compressing and Reverb.
listen to different sound system (also boombox, car stereo etc) could helps to hear different rsults

Re: mixing and production
TRY TO ROCK IZOTOPE OZONE VST FOR THE FINAL MIX (IT SERIOUSLY BOUNCE YOUR TRACK BUT REMOVE A LITTLE RAWNESS).
