Saving in the 404SX/banks

Hey!
New/proud owner of a SP404SX. I think I've got the jist of it, but I have a question...
I understand that there are 12 banks to save from. Now, is this 12 banks per SD card? Or am I only allowed to have 12 banks period?
I'm coming from a MPC background where I can save a project and move on. I find it odd that here you only have 12 banks to save your projects in...
I find that this machine is more so a sample library for you to playback live during a set/gig.
Any feedback would be great thanks.

I have two cards one for drums and one to keep my chops on and save the beats on another.
