Can someone explain REMAIN

New to this. Coming over from MPC land to try and do more LIVE stuff.
I've tried searching this but keywords are a little broad so couldn't find what I wanted.

To my understanding, you use the remain button to select which pad you would like your effects to, effect! Let's say for example I'm use a delay on Pad 3, which has been playing on a LOOP. I engage the delay as I turn the Pad off.
Delay rings out, I then engage the other pads (2,5,9) to play the song.

If I press REMAIN - Pad 3 is illuminated, as expected. (remember I haven't disengaged delay either). While holding remain, pressing the other pads makes the delay effect them. Makes sense.
However, if I press the delay button, it starts affecting Pad 2. Holding remain will illuminate Pad 2.

So my question is, why?
Why pad 2 not all pads? Why doesn't it stay illuminating pad 3?

remain Shows the remaining sample Memory, the remaining battery life, the current pad (the one used most recent)... and you can use it to apply effects on multiple pads.

SO THIS WHOLE TIME FOR 6 YEARS IVE BEEn LETTING THE REMAIN BUTTON
PLAY EFFECTS ON EVERY SAMPLE.
I CAN CHOOSE THE SAMPLES I WANT THE EFFECTS TO BE ON???
