Breaks vs. Kits Noise to Sound Ratio

Yo SP-family,

I'm used to digging and chopping breaks, but these days, I've been leaning to using more electronic drums and kits. I'm not against producers who integrate drum kits into their work, but I have always leaned on chopping from vinyl.

On the past beat I've done, I've found using the drum kits sound cleaner than the breaks. Like many others, I've been putting the compressor on my pattern, but when I do that, my hits from the break have way too much background noise for my taste. I appreciate the lo-fi, static, however, the noise to sound ratio just sounds bad to my ear after even light compression from the the break.

When I use the same compressor setting on a drumkit, it compresses more nicely without as much background sound.

Does the compressor just make things noisy for you guys too?

Digital drum kits, depending on how they were recorded, will naturally have less sound, especially if created on a computer where analog noise is nonexistent. I.e. you don't get noise when rendering a VST cause there's not any real cables for signal loss or interference to originate. That's my guess as to why they have less dirt.

i agree ^ drum machine kits are built with stacked sine waves so there is no outside interference or static. if you are really a purist who prefers digging, you could also learn which wave shapes to use to build your own kicks and snares using synthesizers.
