New headphones

I need new headphones for beat making. I use grado 125's for listening, and switch between those and a few others for makin music. But ther shitty and old! So after some research I'm lookin at audio-technica m50's. rugged, neutral sound, fold up for travel, coiled cord good for moving around while switching up cords... Any recommendations?

i use some MDR-7506
they inexpensive (under $100) but i think they get the job done quite well

Yep, sony mdr-7506 are THE best.

Yeah, I have the MDR-V6 headphones which are exactly the same as the 7506's and $20 cheaper. I would upgrade the ear pads to these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0016M ... UTF8&psc=1

They improve the delivery of sound to your ears, feel great, and last longer than the flaking ones from sony.

mdr v6 freq response is 5 hz to 30kHz.

mdr 7506 freq response is 10 hz to 20 kHz.

so I think the v6 are for audiofiles or scientists, cause people cant hear those frequencies, probably good to easily detect volume differences or ultrasonic or subsonic overloads, that you would not so easily detect on combinations of other play back or monitoring equipment.


my old headphones had a limiter and i would blast kicks into them, and I thought thats how they would sound haha.

If you're looking for a good balance between ruggedness and audio quality, I'd recommend Denon DN-HP1000.

You can't even imagine what I've put my cans through and they still sound good and don't look even a day old even though they're going on about 3 years old now.

you can't go by frequency response or specs on headphones. the sony v series is their prosumer line. i got the audio technica m40's they're cool. you can never go wrong with those 7506's. they're like the krk's of headphones. the classic akg 240's are like the ns-10 of headphones

that's what i use for mixing/monitoring. Very neutral. I greatly dislike the skinny cord though, wish it was coiled.

I've looked (for like $20 cheapness) at those cheezy skullcandy phones..I know they aren't neutral, but anyone know if they sound good for just like mp3 player or SP jamming out?

The Skullcandy cans aren't that bad. I actually used 60$ pair of Skullcandy buds for a long time when making music because it boosted the bass so much I'd actually pull it back while mixing since before that I had a bad habit of overdriving the bass (still do, but fuck..it's bass, dammit!)

The biggest problems with both cans and buds, though, is comfort. If you're jamming out on a lazy sunday for 5 hours, them shits best still feel like they're not there, else no matter how good they sound, they aren't worth it.
