I'd like to control Cubase Studio 4.1 from my SP-606.
I'm not really using the SP's sampling facilities since I started using Cubase recently - it's easier to edit loops with software and suchlike - but I may as well take advantage of its MIDI control surface capabilities.
How do I set up the SP and Cubase to do this?
Any advice would be very appreciated.

It's very difficult to get the 606 to act as a control surface for anything other than P606 or Kinetic. It's annoying as hell 
To see how good it CAN be when using those programs and then to have it refuse to communicate with just about evything else is the weakest link in the 606's specs - I mean it OBVIOUSLY works, but only with the software Roland want you to use it seems. 
I have managed to get some limited MIDI action with Sony Acid, but only by plugging in through an additional MIDI interface
After years of frustration with controlling software I'm just gonna bite the bullet and get a Remote SL this year.....

There is a very painfull way that i used for AbletonLive_LE(because that version does NOT support SYNC)...I am not sure if this what you want but the general idea is:
A. Assing keybord shortcuts for the DAW(in this case i think Cubase support this,else forget the whole idea!,nevertheless thre's always another way!)
eg.: letter(key!) "p" for play, "s" for stop,"m" for mute,"arrow up" for upper selection and so on....
**TurnOn the Sp606 ,turn OFF the "Tx Midi Sync",set the sp606 to EXT**
B. Install the magical "Bome's Midi Translator Classic" (freeware) and follow the white rabbit:
i. create a new preset '*'
ii.create a new translator '+'
iii.select for MidiIn the sp606
iv.Edit the new translator:For incoming select 'MidiMessages' and tick the magical 'Capture Midi'.
eg.:if you press Play on SP606 you shall see 3 sysex commands...click on the 2d or the 3d NOT the 1st(F0 41 10 00 6E 12 01 00 00 1F pp qq F7)...
Uncheck the 'CaptureMidi' option and proceed on the Outgoing tab
select the keystroke emulator and press a key!eg.the key 'p'
***Turn ON the "Tx Midi Sync"****
You can make as many translations you like.Just combine the fuct that the pads transmit different commands if they are 'Func'ed on "Part Sel" or "Solo" and so on..and the rotators differ on VLINK mode..
For the time i downloaded MIDI-OX-another utility-and I'll explore it(until my creativity returns!).... if you have few particular questions let me know...!
