Newbie with midi clock sync questions...

Here's a fiddly one for the techo's out there.

Just bought a Sp-404sx for making samples. We have a Juno gi keyboard, octopad, guitar and a zoom r16 multitrack.

Now what we want to do is loop different sounds from these different sources together. Now this all sounds simple, however, when looking into this further, we get the impression that we need to sync all this somehow via midi so it all fits together nicely and doesn't go out of time.

Now knowing nothing about midi at all, this is a little overpowering, and we are trying to work out what unit should be the master?

We also were ready to buy a boss rc-300 for the looping, however, have learnt that it doesn't slave as a midi clock? (right terminology??) so that being the case, what exactly do we buy? If anything at all.

The clencher in this, is we are trying to do all this without computer reliance!

So, basically, I think all our gear can handle midi ok, and the concept will work, but do we need a looper? If so what type and do we need midi clock slave? If so how do we do it?

Out of left field, will the Korg KP3 do the job? And will it overdub? We see it loops, but is it enough?


Given I have bugger all idea, I'm hoping I'm on the right track, any help would be great in simple wording.

theres probably a million ways to midi this up, and stuff but ill let someone else figure it out for you.

what I would do, is take all the loops and slap them on the sequencer in the 404 and sync them like that, unless your planning on doing this live, then I would say go for the rc 3000, midi is a just a pain in the ass, unless you really need to link your machines together.

what you want to do is set the RC-300 to master (internal clock), then send midi from the midi out plug of the RC-300 to the midi in plugs of your other gear (chain one through the other, with the 404 on the end since it doesnt have an out/thru plug), and have all the other gear set to 'external clock' (slave).

So it will be like

RC-300 (set to Internal clock) Midi Out -> Juno (set to external clock) midi in.

Juno midi thru (or out if thru is unavailable) -> Octopad (external clock) Midi In

Octopad midi thru (or out again if theres no thru) -> 404SX (external clock) Midi In

That shouldn't be a problem. And if midi is all you want, the m-audio should be fine. If you also want to use samples from ableton you might wanna get yourself an audio interface. Personally i can recommend the Native Instruments ka6. Works great and has everthing I need.
