MAAAN what the hell is wrong with me.
Been looking for records in every charity shop in all the closest little towns, GLENN MILLER OVERFUCKINLOAD, Haven't found any records worth getting, basically since buying my 404 a couple months ago. Tried using Youtube as a source of samples and MAAAAAAN I can't do shiiiiiiiit. Is this a block or should I just throw the damn thing out the window. Anyone else experience this.
I can seem to do stuff for the beat battles on here no problem but the samples are already chosen by someone else so it makes it kinda of easier being limited to a track. Any tips on how to get out the hole????

same symptomes since 07...
do more battles; limit yourself to certain samples and a deadline!
discipline, passion and staying curious ...
there are tons of awesome blogs with reviews and inside infos...
sources shouldn't be an issue...

not much a fan of youtube samples either...

pretty sure even glenn miller got some hidden heat...

Re: MAAAN what the hell is wrong with me.
sometimes i get in the same pattern of listening to record after record looking for a sample, eventually i just get frustrated and just sample the first thing that catches my ear, and once you chop it up it sounds nicer than you thought. load it onto the sp and fiddle around a bit before you disregard. and if that fails then just walk away, listen to beats that inspire you, and try again. and as far as youtube goes, just think of the records that would catch your eye at a store, and search that artist. i dont use youtube but if i did thats what i would do. mindset is a large part of any task, so if you feel frustrated then just chill out and dont force it, you are a creative person, just let it happen naturally. there is no deadline, dont be afraid to walk away and try again later

Live more life.
At least thats what i find..
If i just lock myself away in my room I never get shit done.. If I just forget about producing and go out and do stuff, then I find inspiration just hits me one day, and all the fun times/etc I find energise my mind/motivation

i get my vinyl from charity shops too man, i guess most people do, and i find it better to not look for artists you know about, just get a shit load of random stuff, just cause the cover cathes your eye or whatever, and take it all home and gradually give it a bit of a listen, inspiration can be found in the wierdest of places, and thats when you get even more creative. Just buy what ever cathes your eye, they're only like a £ each or something, you'll find some duds and some gems, and even the duds can come into they're own later. Digging is one of the greatest aspects of making sample based music for me, just DIG DIG DIG, you never know what you might find!
Re: MAAAN what the hell is wrong with me.
i only buy dollar bin stuff, too. you gotta be patient with yrself and just make beats and walk away.
btw: even the duds can be gems if you do stuff like drop the speed, drop the pitch, hit reverse, use yr MFX, resample, etc.
if yr prob is finding parts to sample, then basically yr training yrself to listen for parts more. just keep at it. drop the needle 5 times at random - find something in those lil bursts.

I've had similar crap luck at goodwill/charity shops but i've also found some amazing stuff i would have never fallen into .... check on different days when they restock
Try sampling old VHS movies if you have a player still, or old archive.org streaming movie/b-movie type stuff perhaps.

Dollar bin works out for me every few months, I just spend the money on the good records. Rather spend $5 for a good record then $1 for 5 shit ones, but that's just what I came to after dollar bin diggin too hard for too long in my area. Iv found making music much easier when I have dope records laying around.

Re: MAAAN what the hell is wrong with me.
Dollar bin cheap shit for me all the way too. I don't get records every time I dig, but when I do I always find gold. I've had my fair share of getting bad records, but I always make them pay for theirselves in the end. I'll use the bad records as bartering tools at shops. Just cuz I don't like it doesn't mean somebody else won't. I usually trade 2 bad ones for a good one.
10cent cassette tapes are dope too. I was at a shop the other day and went up to the counter expecting to pay a dollar for 10, but then they wanted a quarter each and wouldn't haggle with me. On principle alone I left them there. Making beats is all about having good mojo with your gear, sample material and your working environment. I'll turn down stuff at garage sales too just cuz the people selling give me a bad vibe.
Like others have mentioned hit up VHS movies. It's seems to be harder to find the obscure ones, but luckily they are cheap enough to give most anything that catches your eye a try.
Just don't get down on yourself or the things you have. Chances are you just need to get out of the space your in for a bit and work in a new environment. Keep at it and things are sure to pick up

this! I often find parts of songs on records i thought would work and was dead wrong, well at least about the part i thought would work, but when i go back and just pick a different part or just sample a large chunk of the song and then just mark random spots I find stuff i missed or chops that work better. like everyone has said don't try and force it just let nature take its course and you'll be pleased with the results. after hearing some of you beats in the arena battles I have no doubt you can drop real head nodder

Iv done a few after hitting the reverse on a shitty sample. Worth playing around with something that shows a little promise.
also on the dropping beats for bad samples i 100% agree. don't force it, move on and come back if you still feel something is there..

you can find some ill samples on the wackest looking records. holiday records, easy listening, religious stuff, etc. it could be a 80s carly simon record. just use your ears and not your eyes

asha c, I would say be patient. Get your samples, work on them for a bit (adding effects and all that good stuff) just have fun with them. don't try to force a specific sound, sometimes you have to let the music create itself. when you feel stuck take a break and come back to it later. That's some of the best advice I can give you.
