MIDI sync with M audio venom

Hello all.

I'm trying to MIDI sync with the venom. I read the write up about using a blank pattern to start out with (very clever) here:

I'm curious how to keep the venom from triggering the samples in the 404sx? Is it as simple as setting the 404 to a different MIDI channel than the venom? If so will the 404 still receive the tempo and start/stop messages?
