Mic problems with my SP-404(SX)

Hi guys, I just recently bought a used SP-404(SX) and everything works perfectly with it except I haven't been able to get any sound from a mic I attached via the mic in jack. Just wondering if there was anything that I might be doing wrong that's causing the mic not to work. BTW, I have already read and followed the instruction booklet without any luck.

only things i can think of

#1 - what kind of mic is it? does it require phantom power?
#2 - is the mic volume turned up
#3 do you have EXT SOURCE & MIC buttons turned on?
