EQ on drums with the sp 303

which way do you guys EQ your kicks and snares to make them sound bigger? alot of the time i sample drums but they are really quiet and lame sounding.

add compression (a lot of people here like the 'vinyl sim' compression)
on the 303 or outside (vst plugins, hardware units, etc etc...)

If you do it in software (pre SP) here are some suggestions:

Bass drum: if its a sub, give a sharp boost around 50 or 60hz...this should be a narrow band (ie, not a wide broad peak, just around 10-20hz wide)

Regular bass drum, try boosting between 90 and 125hz ....add volume at 3k will give you a little more of the beater sound.

Snare: Beefiness lies around 150-200hz.....then around 1.5-2k there is some good sonic info to boost.

Also, remember to normalize pre-loading if you want full volume.

Then compress that like hell on the SP...good luck

I don't typically have to because i focus on sampling good drums to begin with. When I need my drums to sound bigger i just layer then level. Only time I EQ is when I need to fix something (or enhance).

Compression is great (in moderation) can be bypassed with proper filtering though

I ALWAYS use the isolator effect on drums, sometimes I resample and send it through again. Just put everything on max or play around to get the desired sound.

You have to be careful, especially on kick drums, as too much bass can distort the resample.

Compression is good, but be careful as it can destroy the decay of the sample, givint the drum sample less impact!

where do i find a compressor on the sp?

press [vinyl sim] key and turn the (ctrl 1) knob clockwise to compress the sound. (turn off noise and fluff)
or
press [mfx] and select fx # 12 (comp), then adjust compression level, attack and sustain

maybe im just bad at compressing but when i try it on a kick drum it gives it a really ugly popping sound that hurts my ears lol
