Oldskool...?

Post by hseiken »

Okay, I come from a different place than most of you. I grew up on UK breakbeat/hardcore...it was basically some weird strain of hip hop cross pollinated with techno and dance. Here's an example from 1993.

Now my question is...can the hip hop heads hear the hip hop in it? Or is that just hearsay by people who made the music just saying what their influences were?

man I DJd uk hardcore for years, both oldschool/breakbeat and newwer stuff.. thats what i grew up on!

It is related to hiphop in terms of the breakbeats (just sped up) and also alot of the original samples used were the same cheesy/classic samples...

Obviously the instrumentation is a bit different, and its more about crazy drum edits, and really ecstatic sounds/melodies/etc but yeah.. it has some connections - at their rawest, brass/instrument stabs + breaks + cheesy vocal cuts

I dunno if many hiphop heads go for it though.. at least, not the ones that take themselves so seriously

i think it was either photek or ed rush who said that he used to be into hip hop but then got into breakbeat hardcore because it "had the beats of hip hop"
