business model for underground music?

Post by Cannonj »

Do you think its feasible to release an album and let the fans pay what they think its worth? And just charge for merchandise? Trying to get a plan together so that when I do an album I want to not really do it for money but there will still be costs that need to be covered. Any ideas?

Technically yes, especially with the market being flooded with new artists on the daily. I was contemplating giving the first whole album away for free and making money from playing live shows. Merch might be a tricky way to make money (you need to make sure it's quality, make sure you have stock, shipping worldwide, etc) but it's totally a possibility if you get businessman-serious about it.

Bandcamp.com can help you do this without a fee and its simple. All you have to do is make enough hype to get cats on your page. Bandcamp only takes about 5 cents out of every dollar you make. Try it, I've work with many cats on there and the money comes via paypal.
