The compressor on the 404 sx aint worth a dam. Neither on the 555. If you use it with ANYTHING, you have to use something else to get rid of all the hiss. Same on the 555. So compress lightly. I usually run everything into my sp 808 cause the compressor there is fucking great. As for the vinyl sim, dont really like it on the 404 sx either. In comparison, its hard to see it for what it is when you experienced other versions on other roland hardware and see what it should always be like. Its pretty nice tho but you cant compress as dynamically as you can on their older machines. Like the vinyl sim on on light or something, same for filtering, like they are using a 3 db cut instead of the standard 12 or 24 cut. Funny, the other day i tried to filter something to get it as close as i could using the filter on the sp 808 and i resampled like 5 times with the same high filter setting and couldnt even get close. My high frequencies were still in the sound which is what i was trying to get rid of.
LONG VERSION OVER.

dude i use 404sx mfx 12 like mad, you just gotta learn to harness it 8) vinyl sim on sx cuts highs but works for some stuff. i throw a snare thru it to make it sound dirty then re-eq it

well it def is different. i sold my sp404 tho so i can't do anything for you... i use my 404sx mfx 12 way more than i used vinyl sim. tho that may just be my current production style. its much more versatile once you get used to it. i used to hate it cus its sensitive, you just have to get the sounds set right for it to really sound good. vinyl sim is much more subtle, kinda blends all the sounds together once a track is finished
