I am hearing people talk about putting your samples to on tape to get some added

character ...So in what step do you guys put the samples onto tape ? What is the

process ?

maybe Turntable>Tape Machine>SP

or Turntable> SP > tape>back to SP ??

what up from the stix of weston, ct--
i would bounce your finished song to cassette, pushed slightly to the red, so you get that nice subtle distortion. also it will make the tape hiss consistent throughout the mix instead of cutting in and out

Instead of bouncing the whole song, bounce your parts separately to tape (drums, bass, chops etc.. - or get more anal kick+snare, efx's, chops) then bring that all back into the SP for that final grit and quality reduction.

compression helps when you bounce back off the tape

funny that I can't find the adaptor for my portastudio

I used to record my samples to tape and then bring them into my mac for sequencing.. I liked the feel and when I find he adaptor I will be doing the same thing again, using my tape machine and SP family to record and process samples and then load them into my mac for sequencing and mixing in Reason..

curious though, typically I will load drums and bass parts into my 202 for lofi treatment... what sounds do 1/8inch tape compliment best ?

now that i gots a portastudio, i'm loving it. some of my drums that sound a little too 'digital' to me mix well with other sounds on the tape.

tape is usefull for defeating the drm water marking embedded in videos, it also helps to scramble the embedded frequencies in the analog signal. here is a method that is guaranteed to defeat any drm water marking embedded frequencies.

the key is to reproduce the audio, the final result will only resemble the original audio. the built in lofi button actually works good for this because it destroys the signal . There are other things you need to keep in mind, like the left to right binural modulations, I think they use this not only to fuck with your head, to induce behavioral and emotional changes in the listener.

Ok . so first of all lets desttroy the water mark, it is probably concealed beyond spectral analasys, so we must destroy it. You can merge both channels Left and Right, but this will tamper with the quality, So record your sample to tape with left and right in tact. Now record the sample back into your computer and seperate the channels. it is good practice and unless your sample is in stereo you wont need to use the original stereo signal. This works best and you will be ready to use your sample with out it being traced. If you want to use the stereo signal then try and follow these steps. Invert one of the channels wave forms then reverse the sample. while the sample is reversed. add a teeny bit of reverb. and then reverse it again. now you should be able to use the stereo signal without it being traced.

you could split the left and right, record each to tape seperate, bounce back into your computer and remerge them back together,

using any combination of these techniques in combination with lofi and FX will help keep your samples DRM free. never use a un processed sample unless it is from a reliable source, IE , wax, tape, radio whatever.

peace.
