which do you prefer to utilize when making beats? sample chops or loops?

I have lately been more into looping on the sp's, now that I gave up the mpc...still chop tho.

Loops are better for resampling the shit out of.

I like there to be a balance of both ... You gotta know when to chop and when to not.

Don't ruin a perfect loop by chopping it to death..

i like chopping but i'm lazy and usually end up chopping drums and looping samples. looped drum breaks usually sound too '91ish

Gotta confess since buying a 404 I haven't chopped a single break. I've collected a lot of breaks over the years and combined with the 404 FX I can create pretty much any percussion pattern imaginable without having to chop. It's lazy I know but I've always been a poor finger drummer

I used to be all about chopping everything up into individual samples but now I like to chop the loops into bigger chunks. so still chopping I suppose...

I understand this can be a point of contention for some people; looping has the stigma of being unoriginal and non creative while there are more than a few "auto choppers" out there who do not understand groove and why to sample in the first place.

Anyone who says one is better than the other frankly does not know what they are talking about. The basics of each are fairly easy to do, mastering the potential of each is difficult.

Favor neither and appreciate both. This is the hip hop way.
