http://www.reaper.fm/

I got into it yesterday and have to say:
It's fucking awesome.

First of all, it's free. There is just a screen that prompts you to purchase it, but that's only a donation. The program is fully functional even if not purchased, just that 5 seconds waiting when starting a session.

The effects it comes with are crazy and there are a lot of them.

This ain't spam or advertising. I've slept on the porgram for month and now finally tried it. Go try it too.

I run an intel mac so I can boot in windows and use it, plus I have a spare dell pc for running cracked programs but I have that computer dual booting with osx so I'm covered on both sides.

Prior to shortcircuit it wasn't as fun as it could be.

Shortcircuit was created as a reaction against the ongoing trend where software samplers are being designed with the primary intent of library playback. It is intended for people who, like us, consider a sampler to be a musical instrument in its own right, and not just a way to emulate other instruments. It has been a very high priority to make sure that adding and editing individual samples is as fast and logical as possible.

The sample hierarchy in shortcircuit allow you to place samples directly at the highest level of the multi, without having to deal with instrument hierarchies and patches. Want to add a sample to your song? Just drag & drop the sample into shortcircuit and you're ready to go. Samples can be put in groups for multi-sampling and kit-building, but the complexity is only there when you need it.
let your ears be the judge

Sound quality is of highest concern, and shortcircuit uses very high-quality interpolation to ensure that your samples sound as good as the source material, regardless of the pitch you play them at. All filters & effects are calculated at the precision required for them to sound the way intended and oversampling are used when required to prevent aliasing.

Shortcircuit was designed to sound great, all other concerns have been secondary. But don't take our word for it, download 'shortcircuit free' and find out for yourself.
...and the toys, don't forget the toys!

Each voice in shortcircuit features two filter-slots, and the selection isn't limited to the traditional pick. In addition to the regular lowpass/highpass/bandpass/notch & peak-filters and variations thereof there is an array of filter algorithms (not strictly filters in the traditional sense, but called so because of their location in the audio path) including distortion, parametric/graphic/morphing equalizers,bit-reduction/decimation, gating, limiting, slew-rate distortion, ring-modulation, frequency shifting and phase-modulation (better known as FM). The selection even includes analog-style oscillators that you can mix with the sample.

The dude that wrote this program worked on the new Ableton live, besides having better feature than any other program(except ableton) you can basically time stretch or pitch shift anything you want and have it sound just like the original source. Mpc time stretch can stay suckin' a bag of dicks compared to this FREE program.

Great info! I'll def. have a look at this, but it's more like a sampler and instrument. Reaper is a recorder, to record audio from external devices.

Thanks

You can download JUST the the plug-ins from reaper if you don't end up using the sequencer...the plugs were the best part imo

It is, that's why I laugh at all the people who drop money on something that someone else told them it's the best or whatever. Shortcurcuit is basically a free version of ableton live with a simple GUI, it's options kill an mpc and it's %100 free and everyone is still sleeping on this software.

Even mags like Sound on Sound are praising Reaper. As for Audio, they say that it's giving Cubase and Sonar a serious run for their money.
Good looks on Shortcircuit,I downloaded it a while back but didn't mess with it just yet.
There's another freeware plugin that's awesome and it's called Kerstinn

www.shuriken.se

It mangles samples like nothing else!!
Really, freeware is mad dope and It only gets better.

some of my favorite freeware...

forester v1.3

gleetchlab

livecut vst

i looked at shortcircuit when it bacame freeware. very Battery-esque. I haven't tried it as i don't have a PC. probably its most novel feature is the ability to sample. something i guess everybody else forgot about or decided it can be done elsewhere easily.
I do feel sorry for whomever might have paid $140 for Shortcircuit before it went freeware.that's gotta suck.

Yeah, I would've asked for a copy of their soft synth or whatever that other program is that they have.

$140 is nothing when you think about it - look at hardware for example; I paid $2000 for my MC-505 and now it's worth $20. Am I going to ask Roland for $1900 worth of 'replacement' equipment? Actually.......

It's what made it possible in the first place, but I agree.

One more vote for Reaper though, I'm getting amazing results with it. I don't need Ableton or Logic that's for sure!

I was looking into reaper for my new mini acer aspire one laptop I keep in my case for my 606 for a "mobile" recording solution. So its completely free? I thought i saw something about activation of some shiz after 30 days? I have ableton 7 ( I'm a dirty pirate also hehe :D ) But it's a bit much for this lil laptop to run until I make some modifications. I'm always down for freeware.
