SP-606 Sequencing Value limit...

Post by METAFYZIKAL »

I was reading the manual, and it mentioned that the sequencer can sequence a pattern as low as 1/4, but whenever I try it, it only lets me use 2/4. Is this a misprint or is my sp sub-standard?

you're saying that you want to do ONE-BAR patterns??? (1\4)...(2\4 is two bars...right???)

Sequencing to 1/4, means sequencing to the nearest 1/4 note. 1/4 note equals 1beat and there are 4 beats in 1 measure/bar. But the sp-606 can sequence to at least 16th note quantize so I think your talking about the fact that it can record a pattern that's as small as 1beat, but a beat pattern would be so short you could only put like a kick or a snare fit in it. I would stick to making multiples of 4bar loops which is easier to start with.

Ah, I see your reasoning, however, the only reason this has been a problem is because I am producing outside of hip-hop; some "metal" that uses very odd time signatures (such as 17/16). Being able to sequence at as low as 1/4 allows for creating prime numbered time signatures. It may seem unreasonable, but it is the only way on this hip-hop/electronic marketed item.

Yeah, if you want different time signatures then you have to increase the total number of bars and place the kicks and snares in the right place to get an off time signature and then you might have to change the tempo but I've done it so it's possible if you think about how different time signatures are formed.

Well this has been the past month for me, as far as sequencing drums. Some of our signatures cannot be formed within the 2/4 minimum bar limit. I am able to make some, like 14/8 (4/4+3/4), etc, but some are very absurd, like 15/16. If I was able to sequence at 1/4, this would be solved.

The problem is not making writing the music; the instrument parts are already written. I have all the time signatures, tempos, etc, just some very odd signatures. You should see all the pages worth of fractions I have trying to sequence these songs!!!

Roland could solve this one with a software fix. On the ancient tracker programs you could enter a command to 'end pattern' at any point in the pattern. A midi command to do the same couldn't be hard to come up with could it?

Yeah, whatever happened to that vaporware for the 303/404 from Mike Acosta. As far as the odd time sigs the 404 really isn't the machine, you can mix full patterns to get off time sigs but you really need ableton or FL studio.
