can you be more specific about what it is that you're doing? What gear is involved and what is going where?

After i recorded from the tape deck to the digital recorder the sound is a mess. Its some akai tape deck thats hooked up to akai amplifier, would it be better to use the sampler instead of the digital recorder? how do you do it?

for the sake of telling what is causing problem, you should do this. if it's still a mess, then you will know who dunnit! :) (that is, who is the cause of the mess, the tape deck or the amp or the digital recorder)

make sure your levels are good before the initial recording. so, when you are recording from one thing to the next, make sure the source is about as loud as possible before going to the next device. the device that is on the recieving end should have inputs set as low as possible all while trying to get the maximum input. if this is indeed the problem, most unwanted noise will be eliminated.

2nd. To add to Dorkus' method: if the next device in the chain can show when the audio peaks, try to avoid the peak as best as possible. It'll sound cleanest when the peak only just flashes/hits on the loudest sound of the sample.

Why not just sample it directly into your sampler? Why would it be necessary to go into the tracker first?

I was kind of thinking this as well. Unless you're "archiving" tape stuff? I do that with vinyl sometimes, record a couple full records (especially if I'm borrowing from a friend) for later sampling.
