Anyone filtering basslines like this man but on the sp 303? I'm just curious.

I know madlib is a sp 303 user, I've studied his work as well as Browns and I really don't hear a difference between either machines but then again I don't know what I'm listening for besides quality heh.

lowpass song = bassline.. pretty much everything used to be like that!

shouldnt matter what gear u do it on.. as long as u gotta lowpass filter! Being able to pitch up/down helps a bit if its not quite right (like u see in the vid), but you can do that on the turntable if ur sampler doesnt pitch.

So yea, 303 for sure

I understand what the guy is doing but my question is how close or far off is the 303's texture from the 505.

Gear matters a bunch. I sound design and there is no way to pull the edge on a 303 that the S 950 has.

2 different machines with completely differently different builds and qualities in filters.

303=505 in terms of A/D converters and effects as far as I know.

yes 303 is much closer to 505 sound, 404 is completly different and sounds like 128 kbs mp3, the ms-1 sounds kind of like mp3 too, but when you eq it after it goes a way, ms-1 is the best sampler, you can do the sp 1200 trick and slow the samlple down to get the grimey sound. the best way to emulate different old machines is to try different bit crusher plugins and diffrent settings on the sp, I dont want to limit myself to my 404 for sound design, but i am certain it is capable of emulating any machine with the propper know how and external tools. the best way to emulate 12 bit drums is to run lofi mfx over all your drums and record them at a high sample rate, over sampling is the key to great sound for the most part. once your samples are over sampled with 12 bit crusher effect added you should have something close to sp1200 or s950,

this thread sparks a thought that i've had a couple times before:

anyone tried shoving 303 converters into a 404?

Difference between 303 and 505 in terms of sound is that the 303 has white noise and the 505 has less of it. But both machines are the same though except 505 has a screen, and few more features.

good ol kev brown.

yeah, the 303 / 505 A/D converters are the same (as pointed out above). never understood why the 303 gets so much (deserved) attention, but 505 doesn't.

i blame The Man.

If Madlib used a 505 instead of the 303 a lot of people would be using that. We live in a follow the leader world.
