I was definitely a comp digger. I have no shame in my game. I’ll buy a comp in a heartbeat. And usually the people who are the ones that are talking shit about comps are the ones that make ’em. “Aw, man, comps are wack, man… Yo, I just made this new funk comp.” Man, you were just dissin’ comps. But yeah, I’m definitely a comp digger. That’s like going to the library. You learn from those comps. If it wasn’t for Ultimate Breaks and Beats a lot of cats [wouldn’t know anything].

Nice article. Thanks for the find. I always felt the same way about compilations and break records. He is right, the dudes who put them out are the ones who snuff them!! Shadow puts out compilations all the time and I remember he used to say that he stayed away from them and only sampled original pressings. Pretty odd.

I've got the Paul Nice Drum Library in my stash, doubles of Classic Beats & Breaks from Scarface Records, and a set called Drums of Passion.

If I'm going to my boy's crib to work on stuff, I'll always grab my well used copy of Classic Beats & Breaks Vol. 1. There is so much dust and so many scuffs the breaks sound like they came from the OG's anyway. Sure, the beats have been used to death but I'm chopping them for one hits.

Serious! I don't usually fuck with comps but if it's cheap and it's dirty I'll chop out anyting anyting. Favorite part of Secondhand Sureshots is when J Rocc is joking on the possibility of finding a hard ass break on a Barbara Streisand record. MINE IT ALL, MELT IT DOWN AND SMELT THAT SHIT INTO FUTURE MUSIC.
