I know some of you live there. Is this another Rodney King situation? Or is this a more important thing to keep tabs on...?

After more reading and seeing more interviews I've come to realize that this is a big issue--not just some Rodney King-type situation. I'm wondering, and basically just waiting to see if this creates influence for Americans to stand up against our politicians, Government, and banking system.

This may be a bit off topic...but related to youth and young adults-- the other day I was trying to open a new bank account (I have very little income) with my girlfriend--who has an account at this bank--and the teller informed me that the bank would have to charge me $10.00 a month for opening a checking account or even a savings account until my account had reached over $500.00. The US just passed a law to restrict banks from creating extra fees on top of fees for overdraft and overdraft protection. She said that the banks were making tons of money on fees (no surprise there) but now that laws have been passed to protect the low income workers, they needed to figure out another way to screw us. I decided to not open a checking account. My girlfriend will be closing her account soon.

When the people who have the shitty end of the stick (who actually do all the real work) decide to revolt...the higher up "officials" making decisions--but taking no responsibility for who it affect--are going to be shitting themselves. If anybody is going to revolt in America, it would be the majority...the low income "middle class"--which is mostly young people just trying to get on their feet.

I praise those who are taking a stand against mistreatment--and at the same time I'm afraid that through all the violence and looting people are going to lose sight of what they are fighting for. Emotion over-rides logic. These are very emotional times. Hopefully things will get sorted out.

But like I said, I'm just waiting to see now when the green light comes on for people in the US to start rioting.

@ALCscratch I agree and disagree. I feel like hopelessness eventually does cause change and within that realm, voices need to be heard. In the same right, destryoing and stealing things that other normal, middle class, low income people have worked hard for does not help the situation. It actually does more harm to the fundamental ideal the rebellion was based on. I understand peoples frustration at a failed govement and society, but organization is what the powers that be have used against us. We as a people domestic and abroad have to be organized as well. Without that I think all efforts will be in vain.

Quote:
You know what we gon do? We are going to defend ourselves, because Huey P. Newton says: "POWER, Power is ability to define phenomena and make it act in a desired manner." Power is ability to define phenomena and make it act in a desired manner. POWER, if we have the ability to define it the only next thing to do is to get organized. GET ORGANIZED. So when a pig walks up to you or a pig gets to jiving with the people you'll be so organized. You've learned some tactics, you’ll have learned some revolutionary principles, you’ll be having some guns hid out somewhere, you’ll have learned proper tactics. So that when the pig gets to jiving with you, the pig has wronged you, you whip your guns out on him, blow him away and then you have the ability, in fact you have made that pig act in a desired manner

This is what happens when you live in an unjust society..

I am not for violence, but I say loot the fuck out of BIG businesses. burn em to the ground. Would be nice to see them take on some banks/etc but oh well.. I wish I could see the look on some of the old bastards faces when they saw that these people arent just gonna roll over and take it up the ass any longer!

It's not ideological, but it's a sign of the anger in society.

Unfortunately this will never happen in australia, there just aren't enough young people here.. very very old population who also hold most of the wealth (who also get all the aid from the govt they could ever want while us young'ns starve/get no services)

I live in the uk and thankfully i not where the riots are but live close to nottingham where "copycat" riots have broke out. I mean, how stupid is that?

Whatever anyone says this is not about the goverment, the recession or police brutality. From the fact that a huge amounts of independent, local businesses have been destroyed it shows the rioters do not care about who they hit, if they did it would be the banks and huge chain stores. Unfortunately its just about people being dicks and makes me pretty ashamed to be british right now.

One of my friends is old friends with the big brother of the boy who was shot. He told me about it on sunday while i attended his baby's christening even before i saw the news articles. To be quite honest this does have to do with the system.

Today the government issued the ok for the use of plastic and rubber bullets on uk mainland (hmmmmmmm?)
This makes no sense when the officers who killed the young man were using live ammunition on the opp. Should rubber and plastic ammo not be used before live??????????
And just to add, the same taskforce have killed innocent people in the past under the guise of the war on terror.
This is only the first time in the past 15 to 20 yrs that the public has reacted in such a way.

I agree with the point that people should not destroy there own communites.
It would be kind of retarded to do such a thing and then be angry when you have to walk three miles to get a loaf of bread in the morning because you have no shops left but, the police could of delt with the situation in a much more discreet manner.
The protest was more or less peacfull until a 16 year old girl asked the police for answers to why the young man was shot dead, In return she was beaten by several officers which was the catalyist for a protest turning into a riot.
Since then it seams to have spread but i think the reasons are for making profit from looting, not for truth and justice.

A smaller thing happened in glasgow this year for the royal wedding.
We were told on tv by our government to go out and celabrate for our royal family. The police stepped in half way through the day and caused a small riot.
We were given the all clear to go out and have fun in a way that has been illegal since the mid 1990's. Local councils and police were told different and as a result of there actions caused.

There was no need for the way in which this situation unfolded. I was there and can honestly say that all the people police were trying to arrest had done nothing wrong.
But, you can litteraly be put in the jail for a night for farting under the charge of (breach of the peace) if the officer feels it's right to do so.
Infact one of my friends was arrested and jailed for the night for kicking a deflated beach ball that he found in the street.

To be quite honest since the government inforced the criminal justice bill in the mid 1990's this country has became a real shit place to be.
They used it as a way to kill the independant dance music scene and comercialise it into this festival bullshit which in britan is like going to a gig in a consentration camp, Snifferdogs, barcodes, shit food, Barb wire fences, Man the list goes on and on. i could talk about it all day but im gona go make beats.

Peace

‎"Congratulations, Troubled Youth of Britain. Your plan to have your voice heard is going splendidly. Obviously after burning down people's homes, places of work and cars, after looting shops and burglarizing people's homes, rioting outside hospitals and other places that offer refuge and shelter for vulnerable people, after all this, the rest of the United Kingdom will eagerly respect and value your opinion and gladly treat you like responsible human beings."
